    Re: Always check!!!

Sounds simular to an experience I had.
I got my old car (2001 Mazda Tribute) a major service from a mechanic that was across the road from my work, only because it was easier to take it to them rather then take it somewhere else and try find my way to work.
Well I picked my car up after work and drove it home (60km's) in peak hour traffic and as I was driving I noticed that it sounded louder then usual so when I got home I popped the bonnet and had a look. There was oil everywhere, and I mean everywhere. And the oil cap was no where to be seen. So I rang the mechanic and ripped shreads thru him about the damage he could of just caused my car so he advised me to get my partner to tow the car in the next day on his tow truck, as the mechanic knew that both my partner and I worked for a tow truck company.

So my revenge was....... Book a job in the system and charge him almost double the price it usually would have been to tow a car from my place to his shop. It came to nearly $300 all up, plus he had to spend $70 on a new fuel cap.

Never again will I take any of my cars to some dodgy mechanic just because it is a convenience.

... by the way; does the fuel cap do a good job of stopping the oil splashing out :?: :?: :?:

My wife picked my Prado up one time and when i got home she said it did not sound right. Investigations found 3 loose clips on the airbox and then the kicker looked inside the box and what is missing the friggin air cleaner element

I just had almost the opposite experience. Had a 40,000k service done last time I was home, and got home and checked the air cleaner before I put the Unifilter in and I am pretty sure the air box hadn't been opened during the service as there were dried up dead bugs in the element. The Service Manager has been on holidays so I think things are getting skipped.

Don't ya just love some shops, when they get shirty if you question them
This is a great title for the thread.
Got aircon fitted years ago to a dualcab. Came to pick it up.
Can we pop the bonnet thanks
                  Mech: what for?
Because I would like to see how you went with the install.
                  Mech: :x Everythins perfect

Don't really know what I'm looking for but just checking for the obvious when I notice that the bolts holding the radiator in are missing. :x No apology. So i never went back.

Though from reading the news surgeons aren't any better. I guess no ones perfect, but then again someone in that operating theatre should have noticed the scalpel left in

Most common issue I have found over the years is the wheel nuts on so tight that I have had to use a metre long pipe extension on the brace to loosen them. I really should carry that pipe with me in the car.

                    Re: Always check!!!

I had a Nissan Pulsar and after it's 20,000 (pretty sure it was 20.. was a while ago) service they sent me on my way and it just happened to be raining cats 'n dogs so I was paying most of my attention to the traffic (could hardly see past the bonnet it was that bad!) I get up the road about a km and waiting at a set of lights I smell oil... look at the warning light, yep it's on... open the door and get a big whiff of oil. Lights had just gone green so I pulled across the intersection and it cut out. Dipped the clutch and rolled across into a 7-Eleven parking lot and had a look. Big oil slick running out from under the car and from where I'd just come from. I rang the dealer and they sent a mechanic up... quick diagnosis... wrong oil filter had been 'fitted' (they later claimed by the apprentice..). The sealing surfaces didn't even come close to meeting! Anyway, it had siezed the camshaft and snapped the cam drive belt. The engine was a no-inferance design so valves didn't get smashed into pistons. Can't remember if they put a new head on or just fixed the camshaft and associated stuff but they fixed it and it went on to do 240,000 'thrashed' kms (I use to drive it hard!). When I traded it in still going fine, so they did get the fix right! Yes, they gave me a car while it was being fixed.
