  • Displaying Number Plate Details In Photos

    HI All,

Thought it might be an idea to get peoples opinions about displaying number plate details in our forum photos. It seems that someone down in Victoria took offence at a 4WD photo displayed on a 4wd forum lately and made a complaint to Vic Roads Authority giving the number plate details of the car to them. Apparantly the complaint was that the vehicle had been altered and not legal and the complaint was investigated and upheld. It was not someone from this forum but probably good enough reason for us to blat out our number plate details before posting photos on the forum. There are some real nutters out there with no lives and they just want to cause trouble imo.

I am with you Mav . The chances of that sort of thing happening is pretty slim but why give some idiot the opportunity. It could also stop some potential thieves from using our forum as a search base to find a nice accessory on a members car and using the number plate to track it down.

    Blot it out I say!!!!!

Sad, but true. I believe you should blot out any identifiers given that it is a public forum.

Yep .. as much as its a sad indictment on our society in general, and the thieving scum or anti-4WD fragwit brigade in particular ... I reckon it should really become a standard practice for any pics that go up on a public forum.

I was even looking at a couple of clip on number plate covers for those special video moments ... but just haven't got around tuit.

With all the identity fraud going on these days you really want to reveal as little about yourself as possible. Any fool anywhere in the world can look at your numberplate and crank up the plate press out the back for a nice set of copies. Video editing is a difficult one. Number plate covers as suggested is really the only thing I can think of that will work. Just gotta be careful to take them off again as the law takes a dim view of it. Keep any personal information well away from any public webspace. There'll always be some Fragwit waiting to rip it off.

Re: Displaying Number Plate Details In Photos

Just for the record, I don't care if my number plate is visible or not, but I agree that there is more than a fair chance of special interest groups (read greenie groups) and the like who are more than willing to make complaints to EPA etc about 4wd groups/drivers. Most of us could do without the grief of dealing with frivilous complaints and without a rego number visible in photo's, then it will for the most part prevent this problem from occurring.

On the other hand, some of us have some cool number plates that are definately worth showing off!

                Ditto that...

Can't argue the thieving bastards case for blotting out the plates... what's yours is mine huh  But, if we all practise the 'Tread Lightly' philosophy then the greenies and other 4WD bashers will gain nothing from it.

I always make a point of asking around the group I'm travelling with to see if anyone doesn't want their car, face, kids faces etc. on the web....

This was covered about a year ago.

And for a few weeks plates were obscured and then re-appeared. It will happen again.

We wont uphold a reign over obscuring plates as I personally couldnt care less, the chances of something happening are so slim its almost unmeasurable.

Re: Displaying Number Plate Details In Photos

It should be made a law to cover up the plates just for the simple reason of some people have no lives out there and tend to single others out for no reason at all.

I myself have personalised plates that would stick in anyones mind if they saw them so I constantly block them in photos "just incase" I p*ss the wrong person off (i'm good at that  ) and they decide to take revenge on my car. Its just not worth the hassle.

Sorry folks, this was something that came up at the 4WD meeting the other night which is why I posted this thread, but as it appears to have ruffled a few feathers then please TP delete the thread. We used to be able to delete our posts in the old forum but that option is not available now as far as I can tell or I would have done it myself.

Hmmm well you only need to be bitten once to have the pain for a very long time.... I suppose you can make your own decision when when posting your own plates on the web for all to see. My thoughts are though that it would be common courtesy to remove plates from group shots etc as you really can't speak for everyone. Unless you had the prior ok from all involved. I for one would want my plate rubbed out. No matter how small the chance, I really don't want my life ripped off by someone who doesn't give a damn. Not worth getting one's knickers all in a bunch over it though........
