Hey, I also have an Engel like yours Crammy. Mine is yellow with a brown lid. Probably even older than yours. It gets used four or five times a year. A mate of mine is a refridgeration mechanic and he always says that if you have an old spare fridge that you only plug in/use occaisionally eg Xmas it is more likely to breakdown for the simple fact that the compressor is not being lubricated and also any air/ moisture that may be present will condense and cause corrosion as the vapour and oil seperate out inside the refridgeration system. Things like the thermostat may also fail through inactivity. It is best to leave it turned on. The price of electricity may make you think twice though,and just wait till Kevin 747 whacks the carbon tax on it!
