    camping stoves

    i thought i would start a thread to see what stoves people take away with them, i just bought a companion deluxe 3burner of $150 from camping world, also has screwin legs and came with a free bag, i usually take the $20 single burners when i go but they dont cut when ya take the family away



    had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

      We used to carry the three burner (gas) type but when the single burner cartridge types came along we started using them exclusively. The cartridge types are cheap, easy to set up for M/T, lunch etc on the road and do the job quite well. Lost a grommet once in the gas line in the three burner type in far western Qld and was stuffed (found out if you remove the gas line while there's still gas in it it freezes the grommet and it breaks easily ops: ). You could probably take two or three cartridge stoves for the same space as a three burner with gas bottle, legs, etc. A down side with the cartridge types are sometimes if its really cold (< 1-2 degrees) they struggle to generate enough heat. Your setup looks good and the stainless steel looks good when its new and clean.

        I have a two burner similar to yours, also have a single burner if needed. For the two burner, I got a BBQ plate that sits over the burners, one side is a flat surface the other side is for grilling.

        Have done a spag bol for six adults just using the two burner on our last camping trip. Not to be out done, mother inlaw used the single to do the same the next night........bloody show off

          I hedge my bets, as I carry both types.

          When I set up a decent campsite (as in, staying for a few days instead of an overnight stay), I use the 3 burner and have an extension pole that I use a gas light on for the campsite. I usually keep the cartridge one as a backup (as I too have suffered the failure of the dreaded O ring ops: ) or for a quick cuppa when out and about. I find them really convenient and portable, its just that they don't put out as much heat compared to the big 3 burner, and with the big one I can have the billy on while cooking breakfast.

            Got one almost the same except for different colours. take this when we go away. Three burner Companion with screen in legs and fold down toaster rack. Works really well and happy with it.

              Be Aware--Beware--The later model relatively cheap single burner (cartridge) type stoves CAN be lit with the Cooktop in the transport position.
              It is very easy to overcome the (alleged) Safety Catch.
              I have two of them, the early model (National C) is constructed with a much better Safety system and would need a lot of effort to bypass the Catch, the newer model (Gasmate) I am extremely careful with, if lit in the transport position it can turn the flame back onto the can with possible disastrous results.

                We use the same and are very happy with it. The screw in legs are also very handy.

                    Another cartridge stove person right here. Purely on price and space reasons. I've got two of them and there's nothing better when stopping for morning tea to get a decent coffee going. The heat in them can be lacking though it's true. Plus they get badly affected if there is a breeze playing havoc with the flame. You need to set up a decent wind guard for them. Now looking at a decent burner and gas bottle setup as we amass more gear and are going on more lengthy trips. Nothing too bulky though. Looked seriously at that Coleman unit K120_man showed above but wanted to get some low down on them first. Like I'd like to be able to get a decent pan on it for cooking steaks if we happen to be able to get some while on our trip. Some are a bit small for that.

                      I have recently bought a coleman even temp and have to say it's the best camp stove i have ever had or used. It came with a full length non stick bbq plate which comes handy for steaks and snags etc. It can be run off gas bottle or small gas canister which is great for day trips as you don't have to lug a gas bottle around with you. Its looks pretty flash to 8).

                          My stove arsenal includes:
                          • Trangia (spirit-burner)

                            The Trangia is ideal for up to two people. Very light and compact, so also suitable for hiking. Cooking containers double as bowls. Silent cooking. It's bomb-proof.

                            If you want BTU, then these are hard to beat. It is large and awkward to pack. It gives the greatest amount of cooking space and is quiet. Great when I need to feed an army.

                            Noisy as hell. Easy to pack.

                            If you want gourmet tasting meals, then the smoker is my favourite. Though it's bulky and awkward to pack. The cooking aroma is best enjoyed with a cold-one or three . Completely silent.

                            Ahhh, the good old trangia Mine stays in the back of the car with some basic supplies for a road side cuppa occasionally. As you said, absolutely bombproof.
