  • Ipods

I know this is completely off topic, but hopefully the mods will take pity on me and wont delete it.

I recently bought both our kids Ipods, my daughters is 4gb and sons is 8gb. My daughters was bought first and she set up Itunes on our computer and all seemed to be working OK.

Then my sons birthday rolls along and we buy him an Ipod (could only get the 8gb variety at the time). He updates Itunes with the software from his machine and now they tell me both units have the same songs on them, and to make things worse they cant delete each others unwanted songs from their respective units. :?:

My son prefers a range of music from todays head bangers to 80s music, my daughter prefers girly bands and teeny bopper music, so the mix isnt good. Both wont let me near the set up and do a good job of looking down their noses at me when I start to ask questions about what and why etc (what would you know dad?), so I'm wondering, is it possible for both to set up separate accounts on the one computer so they can both have their own music?

Is it possible to for my son to delete my daughters girly music (and vice versa) from amongst his Alterbridge/Cold Chisel stuff? I'm no computer wizard, but I'm not a novice either and all their mates keep telling them they are stuck with the current format. I find that a little hard to believe, surely there are other kids in this world using the same computer to run Ipods and Itunes?

I'm not really interested in the music, just the peace and quiet that hopefully will come when they both are listening to their own music tastes without arguing over who's music is the crappiest.

    Re: Ipods

think you're in a bit of a bind there... my experience is that one ipod can sync with one itunes. what you're explaining though is two ipods with one itunes (which i've never tried but can see it working)

what you want, is 2 ipods and 2 itunes... which you can't do... i.e. you can't install itunes twice.. or have two different profiles within the one itunes.

only thing i can think of that you could do, or the little wise ones could do, is set up a few playlists, then tweak the settings of which playlist should be syncing prior to plugging in the ipod... may work, but untested...

easy, though potentially not practical, solution, would be two computers... but that's not always possible!

      Re: Ipods

I can see how this would happen, but haven't had to deal with it (yet)

One solution would be for them to each create their own playlist in itunes, and alter the sync settings before they do the ipod sync.

(ie. turn off Music sync for "All songs and playlists") and manually change the Music sync to their own music before hitting the sync button.

For this to work, they would need to turn off the automatic sync that happens when the iPod is first connected (look in preferences/Devices/"Disable Auto Sync for ipods and iphones")

Google tells me that there is an official apple support doco on this very topic:

      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495?viewlocale=en_US

Hope that all helps stop the squabbles

        Re: Ipods

create 2 playlists, one to suit your son and the other your daughter. when you plug your ipod in you can choose to sync it to one playlist but not the other.

ctl+n is the shortcut to create a new playlist. Once the playlist is made give it a name and drag whatever music you want into it. You can also do a smart play list (ctl+alt+n) which allows you to discriminate against certain parameters and can update itself live.

once you make a playlist you then need to set up your ipod. When you plug it into the computer, you will be shown a summary screen. the next tab along it called music.

You then tick the box that says 'sync music' followed by the radio button 'selected playlists' and then in the scroll box tick the new play list you made in the previous instructions. Make sure the radio button that says 'all songs and playlists' is not selected.

when this is done, press the sync button bottom right corner and the ipod will then be sorted to your preferences.

Yep, we are the same, multiple ipods off 1 x computer.
You need to set up different playlists as suggested, and sugggest you set up one for yourself as well. Our kids have a couple of playlists on the go for themselves.

If I have an all night drive somewhere, I borrow one of the ipods and its great.

also you can create diffrent windows users, and it will be like they have there own PC's, thats what i did for my little bro, they can then log in on there windows account and sync away.

but the soloution by James is porb more practical for you, if you don't want to use you PC to play music out of it.

                      Re: Ipods

Thought I'd let you know what happened with the Ipods. I went into preferences and found a box that said something like "syncronise on start up", I unchecked that and that gave me access to the sync radio button which had previously been dulled out in both.

I found my daughters playlist had all the buttons checked (except for my sons), so I unchecked them all and made sure the "all songs and playlists" was not checked as advised. Did a few other things (which I cant remember without having the Ipods and screens open in front of me) and now it all seems to work OK.

Anyway thanks for the advise, I now have two happier kids who have their own playlists on their Ipods, but they still think I'm a numbnuts. :|

                            Re: Ipods

An easier way is remove all syncling and tick manage music manually that way you can have mutiple ipods, phones and dont have the whole library on them just make playlists and or drag across what you need
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

Being an Apple fan, I have a couple of really old Apple iPod nano's from when they first came out. Just use them for when camping - as I don't worry about them getting damaged.

Anyway, recently received an email stating that they are both subject to a recall and, if you still have them, you can return them to be replaced with a new iPod nano (current version). Guess what... I have them both!

                              Apple iPod Safety Recall

"Want a brand new iPod nano for free? Apple has them on offer if you are one of the millions of people who bought a first-generation iPod nano between September 2005 and December 2006 – and, crucially, if you can still find it."

Looks like I'm getting two new iPod Nanos for Christmas!
