  • Half Way Round - Alex and Russ

This is a story about a couple that I ran into in Alice Spring recently, or should I say Russell chased me. Anyhow the greeting opened with where did you get your twin tyre carrier? in broad English acsent in the Woolies carpark, at first I was a little surprized by the question but once I noticed his early GB registed Prado I knew he was just keen to see my Prado as well. I got his phone no. and a few days later I invited Russell over for a chinwag. It turns out they were in town mainly because the Prado was experiencing some driveline problems and they were pretty much stuck here until they got it sorted.

The Prado they are driving ended up being an early 1996 95 series 3 litre grey import from Japan and is not too different from mine. Apart from the added extra guard mounted mirror and the horizontal chrome grille with a over the top typical Japanese chrome bar. It had the TX badge which meant it was the Diesel and Russel also told me there better known as the Colarado back in the UK.

The majority of extras added to the Prdao have been purchased in Australia due to very little avaliable back in the UK, although he did get his OME suspension at home before the trip. Since leaving the UK the Prado was transported to mainland Europe then driven across to Russia and then transported by ship to Australia.

When he finnaly reached our shores in Brisbane he got hit with a large cleaning bill for the vehicle and the container due to our strict laws. Once on the road they took no time before heading west towards Alice via Uluru and on the return leg back to Alice almost getting them stuck in the floods on the mereenie loop.

With the Prado stuck in the workshop getting fixed I invited them for a run down the West Macs with Fergs. We decided to checkout the Hugh river area as well as part or the Larapinta Trail.

Hopefully they'll sign up to Pradopoint... that would definitely be a trip report worth a read

I wish I had the balls to ship my car around the world and do some serious touring.... Good on him.

We have a family friend who takes his motor bike all over the world... he's off to Sth America shortly..again! He's had some awesome adventures.

Mind you I love Oz... we've seen a lot of it in recent years and I could spend the rest of my life on the road here. (if it wasn't for work...goddammit).

This is the only photo I took on this day trip, its at Stuart Pass. My Prado at the front and Fergs behind, this track in a few sections was a bit rocky and slow although it was good. Plenty of everything sand , rocks and dirt.
