  • Prado = Photog Transport Vehicle

Seems that prados are becoming the choice vehicle for transporting photographic equipment and its photographer

From my travels and from some of the picts turning up on here, it seems Prado Owners and Photography have a symbiotic relationship 8)

Re: Prado = Photog Transport Vehicle

One has been used in the SA rally championships for a couple years now as the official media vehicle.

I know of a couple togs that use them as well.

I own a Prado... and I am a photographer... so it must be true

My next mod is to run an inverter out of the car from the dual battery so I can run my 240v studio lights on location... can't get more of a photographic vehicle than that
      Cheers, Leon

I probably should have clarrified that statement as the camera equipment being worth the same or more than a prado.

A $25,000.00 camera was good for 20 years or so... now a $15k - $50k camera needs to be upgraded every couple of years

Tell me about it, I run a 4 lens ADMC which basically = 4 x H3Dii-50's and can't be insured due to it being located on the outside of the aircraft. It has approximately an 18 month life

Edit: Sorry for the acronym, ADMC = Aerial Digital Mapping Camera, used for low altitude aerial photos which is fitted to the belly of plane.

Yep, another Photog here! The practicalities of the vehicle for photography were definately up there in the priorities when buying.
Which studio lights are you using? a pair of 500's would suck your batteries pretty quick I'd think. And IMO anything less is useless unless it's photomac work you're doing.

I really miss my roofrack for landscapes though (need to fit one soon). On the Rav4 I used it all the time.

Ahhh, we're all coming out of the woodwork

                            I use Hensel 500ws monoblocks...
One option was the Flash Feeder which does approx 600 x 500w full power dumps using a 14Ah battery so I figured running my lights of a 105Ah battery via a pure signwave inverter it should go for a tad longer
The other option is the Hensel Porty packs but the amount I shoot away from 240v I couldn't justify doubling up on lights I already had.

I just need a third cross bar for the Rhino rack and then I'll be able to get a solid base up there to shoot from as well.

Excuse my ignorance... but what's Photomac ops:

Re: Prado = Photog Transport Vehicle

Sorry for getting a bit techo but at Uni we will fail an exam if we call it "macro" photography as that simply means mega-huge scale photography - like bigger than ultralarge format etc etc whereas photomacrography is making something really small look larger through photography (In fact technically anything on the side of 2:1, 5:1, 10:1 is called close-up and anything 1:1 or greater magnification is called photomacrography). Of course most people shorten it to macro but we get used to shortening to photomac in our photo jargon.
I like the sound of your setup. For most of what we do 3000ws are needed but I could get away with 500's. I suggested running these off a few car batteries and one of my lecturers said forget it, that's what the Broncolor portable packs are for (we use Broncolor for a lot of stuff). I thought yeah, but have you seen the price of that stuff    It is absolutely fantastic though.

Very interested in this...it could be great for some stuff I'm likely to do this year. Do you know how many dumps you DO actually get off the 105Ah battery?
