Yes...people often forget that a UHF is a radio, not a phone.... anybody could be listening in.. Hope this helps...

Re: Best UHF channel to use?

Further to this, I am wondering which repeater channels to use around Brisbane?

Is there a map of repeater locations or repeater usage in a particular area? Does a single repeater utilise multiple repeater channels (ie: all repeater channels available when in range of a repeater) or is it single channel per repeater?

I understand the concept of repeaters (being a pilot) but aviation comms information is widely available. Whereas, info on land communications appears either disjointed and unreliable, or far to complex for the average Joe to understand.

        Anyone with advice?

Have you checked Google, there appears to be heaps of info out there on repeater channels and locations.

          Such as:

          http://www.cbradioaustralia.com.au/p...ions_australia
          http://www.uniden.com.au/AUSTRALIA/n...er_station.asp
          http://www.tropinet.com/uhf-repeaters/search.html
          http://www.exploroz.com/Interact/UHF...Index.asp?xc=1

Is this the kind of thing you are after?

Best way to find if you're in repeater range is to transmit for a second or two, if you hit a repeater you should hear a second or so of static after you stop trasmitting, sometimes you also hear a beep, depends on the transmitter. Make sure you are in duplex mode when you do this. My new Icom has a repeater scan mode to find repeaters in range

It's also a bit embarrassing when the MIL is listening in on the trash-talk. I've never seen her so quiet before .

Many radios support encoding methods to ensure you don't hear others on the same channel that have not selected the same encoding. Check your radio to see if it supports CTCSS or DCS. With encoding, you can keep the innocent ears innocent.

When the kids are in the car, our tour party selects a little-used channel and applies CTCSS. The catch is that the channel is still broadcast, and they can hear you (I believe). To be a polite user of CTCSS, one ought to turn off squelch for a moment, to see if someone else is transmitting, before transmitting yourself. In practice, that polite rule is often forgotten.

I must try to post a colour-coded card I designed with the various channels. I just need to register to some free-media-hosting site.

                Cheers,
                LFaR.

Re: Best UHF channel to use?

I normally sit on 16 or 40 depending, 16 for most day to day due to most PP trips being conducted on 16, and switch to 40 for blocked traffic etc - nice to know whats going on.

When traveling on the Highway, will scan between 28 and 40 - both are registered for highway use, and 90% of all trucks will be on one or the other. Although 18 is set aside for caravans/campers etc I will still use 28/40 and only switch to 18 if and when required.

Very nice list Mick, have something very similar pasted to the back of my handheld for quick reference

Thanks mate, just what I was looking for. Google never seems to give me the most valuable info. Maybe I wronged it in another life...

I have seen info like this previously but not in as much detail. Thanks for the link. I'll have to keep this PDF in my phone for access when needed.

The CTCSS system might be the go. The minister doesn't particularly like the language on the channels I occasionally monitor. After that, I stop listening to the police radio and switch to channel 40!

Here is a document I created to keep a flash-card in my glove-box. After printing it, I folded and glued it around some cardboard and wrapped it in plastic, the same stuff we use for covering the kids books.

Bleap if Bleap only Bleap there Bleap was Bleap a Bleap voice Bleap recognition Bleap function Bleap to Bleap silence Bleap all Bleap the Bleap colourful Bleap language Bleap Bleap Bleap Bleap

Notice I have only used Bleap every second word. Some special people on channel 40 can run multiple Bleap Bleap Bleap Bleap words in a single sentence but this takes special skill
