      Re: Camping and kids...

1st daughter was 18 months when she went on her 1st trip and 2nd was 5 months. Everyone will cope with kids and camping in different ways. We have friends who couldn't cope without a caravan, we went with our second daughter for a month or so in a tent around the east coast of Tassie and that was ok but we have opted for the camper trailer now just for setup speed.
The trip round Tassie was a little harder because our daughters couldn't be breastfed much so sterilizing bottles etc becomes a bit labourious. Take heaps of rubbish bags...lots of nappies!
Our last trip (oldest is now 4 and 2nd 18 months) saw us take camper trailer and the port-a-cot was invaluable for those "lock them in bed till they go to sleep" moments
It also depends on whether you like to do one night stopovers or stay for a few weeks in one spot. We did both on our last trip and found toys etc must stay in trailer on the one night stops. Rivers were a must on anything longer than one night and our 100ltr clothes tubs were perfect for splashing around in.

4WDing is a bit tough on very young kids necks but once they have the muscle strength they LOVE puddles and mud.
Just be sure to be realistic about how far you'll get each day on or off road. They do take time - but that's a major benefit in some ways.
      Cheers - Phil Taylor

        Re: Camping and kids...

We waited until each of our kids were walking before they went camping. Easier for them to get around and not so much crud attached to them.

          Mick,

somehow that ewww factor is not as bad when they are your own. Our middle daughter was terribly car sick for the first almost 3 years so we carried towels in the car just in case. She usually gave us about 15s warning by screeming in pain then later saying "I need to spit". Amazing what a large bath towell can catch.

As for mobility we often carry the portacot and always a walker instead of high chair to feed the youngest. The walker is great at keeping her off the ground and from finding all sort of stuff on the ground to chew. And its a lot easier to feed her. Just need to keep a close eye on her as they are not the safest thing around. If the ground is rough or there are steps, we remove the wheels to stop her from falling.

But just remember one thing. Some very wise advice an old midwife gave us when our first was born. Every baby is differentand if you try something that works for someone else and not for you don't get too disapointed.

              Re: Camping and kids...

The mention of car sick reminded me. I travel by plane every couple of months so I have picked up a few of their chunda bags and keep them in the seat pocket directly in front of the kids (you know the ones no-one uses to put their film in anymore in this digital age). Store nice & flat & always ready when you need them.

This is a really smart idea. We do similar, but use sick bags provided from a friend (nurse).

                  Re: Camping and kids...

After fitting all the teenage creature comforts - tv, dvd, laptops, x-box, etc etc Cape York finally saw our two sons (then 15 & 16) say "No More!"

"Not another gorge, not another beach, not another track, not another hill,......"

"That's it, you're both banned from camping with us forever!"

I sold the big Jayco Outback Swan and bought an amazing proper off-road trailer just for the missus and me. Now there is more room in the engel for my alcohol and we can go anywhere we like. No tv, no dvd, just the bare necessities. And especially no squabbling and fighting in the back seat.

Something to look forward to but seriously, enjoy the camping no matter how old the rug rats are. Quality time together as the family unit is what it is all about.

Bushbasher... out of curiosity, what brand of trailer did you buy?
