  • Adelaide to cop 3 days of 41 + while the Diamantina floods

Just checking out the weather report on the S.A. weather bureau site and noticed there is a flood warning as the diamantina river system is in flood at Birdsville and will eventually flood into Lake eyre. While on the other hand Adelaide is about to cop 3 days of 41 degree heat and more to come. seems such a pity the water doesn't flow down into the Murray system and down to Goolwa where its so dry the exposed river banks and lakes are leaking sulphuric acid.

Re: Adelaide to cop 3 days of 41 + while the Diamantina floods

Unfortunately I'll be starting work tomorrow through to Sunday. I'll have the AC turned up to the max in the work Commy that's for sure.
I'd love to be on some days off to venture down to Aldinga in the Prado. 41 degrees, cool water and some icy cold beer(s).

Much better than being at work

Some of that excess water definitely wouldn't be knocked back down in Alexandrina. Haven't been down there before, could be worth a look, although it'll be a sorry sight.

    Cheers,
    AJ

Re: Adelaide to cop 3 days of 41 + while the Diamantina floods

Our first big trip in the Prado in 2004 included a trip to Adelaide via Broken Hill. When we arrived in Adelaide it was 42 degrees, that afternoon a southerly buster blew in and it dropped to 16 degrees overnight. This was a big change from a Brisbane summer day that starts hot and stays hot.

South Australians urged not to use air conditioners in heatwave

          This is part of what some idiot is suggesting;

DOCTORS have slammed a State Government press release urging people to use alternatives to air conditioning during a 40C-plus heatwave as "highly dangerous".

Citing our community's environmental responsibilities, the Government today put our a press release saying there were many alternatives to using air conditioners, urging South Australians to instead insulate ceilings, use external blinds or a pergola to shade windows, and use fans.

"There are many ways to keep your home cool before using air conditioners," the press release states.

I read this early in the news and thought then that it was absolutely ludicrous to tell people who have aircons not to use them on extreme temp days like this. Some people are just too extreme in their green views imo. If I were there and had an aircon I can tell you it would be set to max all day and night if need be.

My house here in Alice has two whopping great 3 phase aircon plants on each end of the house and they run continuously day and night here in summer. The house was never built to be lived in without aircon.

God bless C.F.M.E. Union enterprise bargaining agreements.
Knocked off at midday today, after a half day safety training seminar,
came outside to be hit with 38`c , bloody shock to the system.
March last year we spent the Adelaide cup long weekend at Meningie caravan park 40`c plus.
Beautiful little spot on the shore of lake Albert, Trouble was the water line was about two hundred
meters from the grassed edge of the park. Actually had to recover a Hilux traytop from the lake bed with the Prado.
I have been feeling for these communities that rely on the lower lakes for their
survival and livelihoods. Makes our grizzles about the heat seem insignificant.
One of the best ways to support such areas, is with our patronage as four wheel drivers and travellers.

And that's part of the problem Mav.

Our pathetic grandstanding State Government makes promises and ridiculous statements like the one quoted, rather than fixing the electricity infrastructure that can't cope with these heat waves and the demand on the system

They put themselves on an environmental pedestal banning electric mains pressure hot water heaters because they are responsible for emitting greenhouse gases (agreed), but they still allow houses to be built with North facing windows, no eaves, and whopping great airconditioners. Then they come out and try and score more greenie points and tell us not to use air conditioners

They offer a token rebate with great fanfare to encourage people to install rainwater tanks , then they reduce the rebate on installing solar panels :?

My place is 70s solid brick, with double insulation in the ceiling, big eaves, shade trees on the north side. We close it up at the start of the day, and at the end of the day it is still cool enough to be comfortable. The aircon is mostly used to blow cool air through the house overnight, fan only.

My place is a 60's built double brick but the roof is tin with no insulation and no attic space just tin then plaster board. I have been told that the aircon plants on these old style houses run at $4000 per quarter to operate. Luckily this is a company owned house and we do not pay the utilities otherwise I would rip them out and put in more economical split systems.

Re: Adelaide to cop 3 days of 41 + while the Diamantina floods

                          Same here in Darwin.

The older styled 'troppo' houses were specifically designed to capture cross-flow winds and keep houses cool despite the temperature and only needing ceiling fans. But after Cyclone Tracy, the newer (back in 1975) designed houses better resembled nuclear bunkers. Don't get me wrong... these styles of houses are THE most indestructable designs ever. I've lived in a few of these various designs and they would, no doubt in my mind, protect you in any storm. But cooler, they were not.

All the current designs for houses nowadays include split-system air-cons, indeed, these newer house designs are based entirely on this cooling method and look, quite frankly, better suited to southern climates. The do not provide for any cross-flow ventilation or an ability for hot air to escape the building. In addition, housing blocks are now much smaller (from over 1000sqm) to often 700sqm or less (down to even 400sqm). Often, adjoining houses are only separated by about 1-2m (or less) on their boundary line thus preventing airflow between properties. So even if you were to sit outside, the airflow would be restricted due to higher density housing policies

It is sad in my view that so called 'green designs' are not green at all. Rather, they promote the use of energy through their design - rather than seek to save energy. That is why I remain somewhat of a sceptic when it comes to the 'environmental' movement and climate change. I accept the latter, but still find it difficult to understand why Governments do the things they do if climate change is such a serious issue. Methinks that petroleum companies and electricity companies and the like still have too much of a major influence in what Governments say and do. Otherwise, you'd think that greener solutions and more efficient energy devices/machines/designs would be promoted much more strongly.

My place is over 100years and old built of solid stone, high ceilings and stays cool for the first couple of hot days, but a heat wave like this and the split system will be going on thats for sure ops: I have to get up and go and work in a factory that gets hot after a couple of days. can;t spend all day in the office so I appreciate being able to come home a relax in a cool house. That the way it will be until another form of "green " cooling is found.

                              Quoted for truth.

The reality is that we have seen very few accessible and truly green designs, and even if they were available there is vastly more energy to be saved by fixing up the mistakes in the buildings in use now. We're a long way from having a government ready to make a policy decision about that, even less throw any money at it. Maybe something will change when they see Obama actively moving to rid his country of it's dependence on foreign oil.

Some of the smartest Solar energy brains in the world are Australian. None of the companies they built are, despite Australia being a solar insolation hotspot.

                              Laughable, and indeed very sad.
