  • Ants in the Prado

A bizarre thing happened this weekend to the truck. It has been hot, humid and wet in SE QLD this weekend and the little black ants were going crazy moving house.

So they decided to movie into my Prado

The buggers had climbed up and started to build a nest inside one of the Toyota cross bars on the roof - eggs and all.

This happened in about 24 hours as I didn't drive the car at all on Sunday. It took me over two hours to work out where the ant trail ended, pull the alloy tray off, pull the cross bar off and dismantle it to get them out.

There was thousands of them  (no pics sorry)

They can be buggers to get rid of, and really like all the dry hide-e-holes in cars. Hell, they've even got into Team Piggy's avatar.

Make sure you get rid of them all, as they can really upset electrics (and the passengers). You might have to get one of these  :

Be careful they don't get into the electronics, there are a growing number of cellulose based products finding there way into electronic bits. I suspect the auto industry is the same as every where else ???

I have a number of remote nodes/data loggers and it is not uncommon for ants to get into the electronic gear (i.e. in less than 24hrs). I left a laptop at one site for an over night analysis and in that time they nested over the CPU. While they were having their party, they cleaned up all the cellulose based boards/fittings = stuffed laptop.

I am seeking ant proof or cellulose free components as a result :x

Hopefully there are no ant lovers on here
The best way to 'control' them is to use some Ant Sand, spray with surface spray and place some AntRID (in the some old milk bottle tops) around in a 5m circle.
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"
