  • Toyota Prius

I just spent a week in sydney.
Hired a Prius, well actually ordered a Hyundai Getz but it wasnt ready. and when I gave it back after about 400 odd K's I had to fill it up before returning it.

Guess how much it cost to fill it up...????

    Wrong.
    It took 21 litres. ($24)

    That is good milage.

Has anyone else driven one. Pretty freaky thing in silent mode.

Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

First time I stopped at the lights I thought I had stalled it as I couldn't hear the motor running

Sadly they are actually less economical than a corolla and other cars ofslightly larger size (and also build quality).

I looked at buying one to do the Greenie thing, and after looking at the build quality and poor mileage gave it a wide berth.

I'm with TP on this one... might sound wiz bang but despite an upgrade a few years ago it's still a mid 90's car (1997 release), with a rated economy of 4.4l/100 plenty of conventional small cars offer comparative or better fuel economy at a fraction of the cost. Hyundai i30 crd or Peugeot 307 spring to mind as better packages all round.

Firm suspension, Harsh engine start up (jerks). Might be a lot of technology for the money but very little car for the money, VERY high depreciation rate.

At over $40k plus on roads you could buy two similar size petrol cars and have change....

Might have a green image but it's old news and the technology seems to have stalled. NOT good enough Mr Toyota (or any other manufacturer for that matter)

Me too. I reckon they these are just an one example of a company profiteering on the 'green' movement. Personally, I rather save the money needed to buy one of these expensive "I care for the environment bumper stickers" and just plant a few extra trees each year.

Actually, I think the Prius is not that bad.

It is a bit of a wrong-footed approach that solves the wrong problems, but there is a lot of useful technology in it that will hopefully pave the way for a better car in the future.

The reality is that it is 100% powered by fossil fuel. We should be moving away from that.

                Re: Toyota Prius

Well in response to some of that, I think that it was farkin great economy for a car you dont hit your head on the roof lining with four blokes in it. Aircon on full all the time, (40+C days). my bike averages 6L/100K (Kawasaki ZX14) this got about 5L/100K
I cant report on NEW build quality as it already had 50,000K's on it but there were no rattles or bits hanging off it. Pretty tight.
I had nothing but smooth start ups with the petrol engine of it, with a smooth transition from electric to petrol. I would love to know how it all works.
It has a energy screen that shows whats happening at any time. From wheels charging the battery back through the electric motor, battery driving the wheels through the electric motor, battery and fuel engine driving the wheels, engine driving and drive to the electric motor and charging battery at the same time.. I would also like to know how the fuel motor starts up so easily and so often.
At the lights the fuel engine stops, as you leave them the electric gets you up and going untill it reaches it's limit then the fuel kicks in and helps. in city driving the fuel engine would start up heaps of times. but I could not here a starter motor???
Power was pretty good for a 1.5l. I was based in the Blaxland area and the old bathurst road was tackled with ease, and in the morning coming down the Mt the first 5 mins were on electric power. weird feeling, silently slipping down the mount charging the battery all the way, aircon on, brakes still working... freaky stuff.
And the looks on the blokes faces when you take of in stealth mode is classic..

The worst thing was the vague instructions I got from the half asleep counter jockeys. Took me 5 mins to move out of the carpark at the airport... mainly because I thought it hadnt started..... But after that it was cool.
Its the first time I have dipped a toe in the Hybrid side of the fuel pool and was happily impressed. Not enough to go out and buy one, (The Prado and the bike will reside in my stable for the foreseeable future) but impressive nonetheless..
Looks like a girls car tho. and ground clearance was poor.... well it is a hire car....

                  Re: Toyota Prius

Due to bad weather today, I took the kids to the Cinema to see Bedtime Stories (starring Adam Sandler). There's a funny skit in this movie when a passer-by starts to berate Sandler about his old pick-up truck and his parking (as he took up two parking spaces). Sandler makes a smart arse comment in return that he'd expect something like that from a Prius owner. She replies, "So how did you know I drive a Prius"?

By the way (OT I know)... the film is a really good family movie.

                    Re: Toyota Prius

I'd like to see some factual figures on how green this hairdressers car really is. My understanding is you still have to plug it in, how much coal is burnt to fuel that.?

Saw a graph in an RACQ magazine that showed that vehicle emissions only accounted for about 18% of all greenhouse emissions - with power generation way over that.(like 3 times)

How much energy is used to build AND dispose of the batteries. How long do they last?

Costs and energy use should be calculated over the whole of life.

My suspicion is that it is just another feel good exercise for greenies. With the price difference alone to cars of similar size, you could pay someone to plant a fuggen lot of trees. This offset is part of the equation.
