  • Camprite Campers

Im currently in the market for a camper trailer and am considering the Coromal Pioneer Silhoutte. The main concern I have is the off road capabilities.
It isnt an out an out off road camper more of a 'semi off road' I think.
Im also considering the Camprite TL8, I like the idea of the beds all being off the ground and the quick set up.

Both units are priced very similar and I would appreciate any pros/cons/advice from fellow Pradopointers

      Hi Pomp,

I considered them, but thought although well built, very expensive, so I went the Jayco route and have a Outback Eagle.

I like the Camprites, I went to the Coromal dealer in Adelaide but although I liked the camper there was one thing that did not impress me with the push out kitchen. When I had a good look at it the push out kitchen still had gaps that could let in a decent amount of insects. I questioned the sales guy and his answer to the problem was, " Oh you could stuff some foam in there to seal it up." Excuse me but I am not paying a premium price for a camper to be told I need to stuff foam in places to seal it up.

          Re: Coromal Pioneer Silhoutte camper

When we were shopping for a wind-up we came across a few opinions on the slide out kitchen. Anywhere from 'no probs' to 'it won't slide out anymore'. We also didn't like how you could see through the gaps to the outside. On our "1/2 lap" trip we met a family at Gunlom Falls (Kakadu) with one and they hadn't had any issues with it. We ended up getting a Goldstream. Both the Goldstream and Coromal are much better put together than the Jayco's but also demand quite a price premium. A prospective buyer needs to weigh up if they think it's worth it. Thankfully all these wind-ups seem to 'hold their value' quite well.

I too like the Camprite and would guess they are much more offroad orientated. Our Goldstream (Wing 3) is big and quite heavy. Wider than our Prado and quite long which would limit where you can drag it. The advantages of a wind-up is the living space you have. A proper table for meals and being able to cook inside.

here's a couple of pics of us 'offroad'

            Re: Coromal Pioneer Silhoutte camper

I spoke to our local Coromal dealer yesterday and he told me that Coromal are releasing a new range of campers in March. They will demo the new range at the camping show around March 25th here in Perth.
Now he reckons this new camper is discribed as semi off road, it sits somewhere between the standard Silhoutte and the Pioneer Silhoutte. It doesnt have the push out kitchen (which by the sounds of it isnt a bad thing anyway)
Its priced quite competively at $22,000 brand new OTR.
Consider the the Standard is $29,000 and the Pioneer $32,000 that seems very good value.
Of course this info is all over the phone so I wont hold my breath on that price.

Ideally I'd like to buy 2nd hand, maybe 2 or 3 years old, but looking at the prices anything decent is close to a new campers price.

Example in the paper this week a Coromal Pioneer (still in warranty mind) is priced at 29,500 (I reckon I can get a brand new one for that price)
A two year old Camprite is priced at $26,500
That sounds big money for something second hand.

My reasoning is that the more comfortable and easier the camping experience is the more my family and I will 'get out there' (Im basically lazy )

Another question I have too ask is how 'off road' does a trailer have to be? I mean sites are accessable via dirt roads at least are they not? I assumed that once setup you'd leave the site and go out on the local off road trails etc trailerless.

It depends on what you want to do, if you just intend to go to the local camp grounds then the Jayco and Coromal type campers are fine but if you really want to go off the beaten track and stay somewhere in the bush then a camper like a Camprite or AORC camper are the way to go. Many people prefer the Jayco/Coromal style camper for a family that likes to go to one place like a seaside caravan park set it up and stay there for a week or two.

If that is what you want to do with your family then I would recommend going the pop top route rather than a fully fledged camper trailer.

Why not hire a Camprite and do a family weekend away with it to see if it is your cup of tea? You will soon find out by doing that which kind of camper suits your needs.

I was hoping to hire a Camprite for the GTG but they were all fully booked.
The GTG was the main reason I was looking at the 'pop up' type of trailers. Traveling from Perth we will have around 22 setups to do in around 3 weeks, I want something that goes up quick and is instantly comfortable.
Too be honest Mav if I were to stay on a site for more than a few days I'd be quite happy with the setup we have now. Its only a tent with a gazebo but its very comfortable once setup.
I feel that if we're constantly worrying about setting up and then packing every day it may spoil the experience.

I checked out the Jaycos today at the dealership, very nice actually.
The Outback Eagle would be the camper of choice for us also, its a nice size. The awning and bed flies were standard as was the roof rack.

But you know they are not that much cheaper than the Coromals. Coromal seem more flexible on the pricing at the moment. Its a buyers market I suppose.

Hi Steve, nice looking set up there.
my good lady and I have been all over the place looking at camper trailers, I've probably spent over 40 hours on the net researching.

I was a whisker away from placing a deposit on a Goldstream with an off road pack, they seemed good value compared to the Jaycos and Coromals. Very nice campers indeed.

In the end we got a Camprite (picking it up next week) the deciding factor for me was the off road capability. We really want to be able to go anywhere. Plus it was the only camper with four beds all off the floor and a 5 minute setup. My wife is still not convinced as she loved the Jaycos but I felt they were almost too comfortable (if that makes sense)

We will do a test run next weekend I hope and post some picks.

Glad too see you are coming to the GTG btw. more the merrier
