  • Block Ice

Does anyone know where to buy block ice retail in NW Sydney (Kellyville, Castle Hill etc) or Parramatta or surrounding areas. Can you get it cut to size or is it just easier to make it yourself out of chinese takeaway containers ops: and plastic softdrink/milk/cordial bottles. This is to be used in a 70 odd litre esky for camping.

    TIA.

I like making my own and the ice cream containers or soft drink bottles work a treat, although I prefer the block shape of the ice cream containers (2L or 4L ones). At least you can use/drink the remants if stuck for water, unlike those pre-packed things. Much cheaper too. 8)

another old trick we used to use pre car frig days was to fill an old wine cask bladder with water and freeze it and it will last for days if you freeze it on a flat surface it will freeze nice and narrow and wont take up much space in the esky and as it melts you get plenty of ice water

That's a bloody good idea! How do you go about filling the cask bladder with water?

              Re: Block Ice

Slowly!!!!! It just takes a little patience just hold the drain valve open and hold it under the tap to fill it with water just takes a little time

Doesn't the valve come off the bladder?

Its been quite a few years since i drained one of its contents but from my bushwalking days we usen them all the time to carry our water. Allways packed at the top of the pack outside the waterproofing sack just in case

You also need to give them a few good washes so your drinking water doesnt taste like stale 'Fruity Lexia'

Off topic a bit here, but the cask bladders have made a good pillow when needed. (BTW, it was along time ago...........)
