  • The OZPIG

    Hi All.

We went to the Perth Caravan and Camping show recently.
    Saw the OZPIG.
Its a metal (big gas bottle?) barrel used for cooking, heating. almost like a Potbelly stove/ sort of.. It all unsrews, unplugs, goes inside itself, and is small and light.

    http://www.ozpig.com.au

Anyway, I have been thinking about it since I saw it, and might spend some of Rudds money on one. $260 odd.

Has anyone used / own/ seen one in their travels?

I think the thing that keeps me thinking of it is how the temperature is dropping at the moment, the smell of slow combustion heaters in the area every night and the smell of the roast he was cooking at the show.. Smelt and looked awesome.
Uses small wood or heat beads in fire sensitive areas like caravan parks or national parks., can be used as a heat source, has a spark arrester on the flu, and is safe to use under a roof (so the claim goes)

    What do you rekon????

    Jeff.

My brother brought on from the same show, he loves it.

He has used it more at home than he has out camping!

G'day there - My Uncle made one identical to the one above from an old keg of beer and some other pieces of metal. We used it over the Christmas holidays at Coolendel and it was absolutely beautiful and a lot safer than an open fire especially with young ones running around. But for $260 I would strongly consider buying one....Cheers!!! TSB

We also saw the Ozpig at the show and imagined sitting around it at night while camping, too be honest the size put me off, not sure if it would comfortably fit anywhere?
We bought a baby Weber bbq in the end (not quite the same I know) but it does have a lid so doubles as an oven, we cooked pizzas in it tonight. Not too bad.
We need some ideas foodwise for the GTG.

We saw it too. looks nice, can imagine it would be great if your staying in one place for more than a couple of days but not practical for us. We brought a dream pot instead not at the show though, too expensive. We've got the cast iron pot which works out perfect for us if we're stopping for a couple of nights, each to there own though.

                Re: The OZPIG

Well we tried out the OZPIG on a trip to Steep point.

                Awesome.

Kept us warm, With pertol station/ bunnings wood bags we would get 2 nights of warmth out of 1 bag ($9). (18kgbag)
We didnt cook with it exactly but used it to coal up for the campoven in the ground. Awesome .

On our return home i wanted to show off my recently learned campoven cooking and did a roast using the ozpig and campoven on the back porch..

I will say this in my best teenages voice..... OH.. MY .. GOD. was it good.
Heated the camp oven on the top, meat in and coals on top with camp oven on the side plate.
Rotated it often and kept the coals up to it, 1 hour later we chucked in the vegies. Kept the coals up to it and rotating it and 45 mins later we had an awesome meal and all the while sitting around a great heater and focul point.

The next morning just tip the leftover coals(cold) in the bin, fold it up and chuck it in its bag.
                AWESOME.

did I say it was awesome....

WA gtg attendees will no doubt be hanging around the PIG... Bring it on.

                Jeff.

                      Re: The OZPIG

Used to live near Blaxland in the blue mountains NSW.
Also have been a motorcyclist for 22 years.
Used to leave work at 6:30am and have to scrape the ice of the seat to sit down.. You can have that.
But also used to go skiing every year down at perisher, I like that..

Nicer over hear, never gets below 0 or even gets a frost.... yet...

But fired up the OZPIG today and had some damper... mmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmm
                      Yummy.
Davids getting the hang of putting it together and also getting the fire started and building coals.
And I'm getting the hang of this campoven cooking on the pig..

                      Jeff.

                        Re: The OZPIG

we've been looking at the 'ozpig' for some time also.
heard on the TV last night there was a caravan and camping show on at Penrith finishing sunday.
so off we go sunday morning and came back with a few goodies, including a pig.
will have to get the misses to practice before we go away next.
