Always been meaning to add this to the thread. Its called a swing away, made here in Alice Springs by Rob Williams who I use to work with. You can see them quite regular at the Todd Mall markets. I was so impressed I bought one. Dads got the tripod style, but if the fire is too big the legs start bending in the heat. This at least isnt in the heat of the fire and has a few options for cooking. You get the post, a nice big frying pan, a billy (better of buying a good stainless steel one with a spout) and an option grill for a little extra.

Re: What is your one "Can't Do Without" Camping Item?

We were camping last weekend with some friends and while preparing dinner and their gas lantern suddenly stopped working, we had a number of smaller lights but I was busy with the BBQ and needed light and Mrs OldGreyGuy is not good with lights as she gets distracted and tends to not focus on when you need light, etc.

I've never really been a fan of headlamps as I don't like their bulk and the light is never really bright enough or a wide enough angle, however a couple of weeks ago I bought a Zebralight H501 on speculation and had it in the torch bag. I went and grabbed it and finished cooking dinner, now I am convinced this is going on every trip. It is bright, has a good wide angle of view, three levels and uses a single common AA battery. In size is is basically an aluminium tube wrapped around the battery which fits in a flexible silicone holder on a headband. I was impressed by the amount of light and the ease of use.

a pair of 'off road' sandals...
After gashing my foot out in the scrub alone to the point that I couldn't drive for a couple of days, infection and running out of food I don't go anywere without proper footwear, normally boots, but around camp, on the beach or just getting out of the truck to open gates I at least have the sandals under the seat to put on at all times.

I'm more likely to forget my leatherman and thats just about welded to my hip...

Agree with you mate about the need for a hat. My family on both sides came out to Australia from Scotland, as a result I have blue eyes, reddish-brown hair and very fair skin which burns like crazy. A hat keeps the old brain box cooler and stops my face and neck burning.

I do believe however that the good old Akubra is not made from wool but of fur felt from the rabbit, and after all there are enough of these pests around to make more than a few hats. Here is the process they use to make an Akubra hat.

So without some crazy POM deciding to import some of these pests for sport we would not have an Aussie icon.

Re: What is your one "Can't Do Without" Camping Item?

Well, this is from our friends in South Africa (there are lots here in Perth, one gave me this) and it seems a bloody good idea.

                    The email is below:

(No idea what the Addo fence is, nor Dolosse, or the chopper. Koeksuster sounds rude but apparently is pastry deep fried and dipped in something sweet - I asked a Yarpie)

Sorry if the images are naff, this is my first post!
                    ----------------------------

Our previous Top 10 inventions in SA include the G5 Cannon, the Addo elephant-proof fence, the harbour-protecting Dolosse, the Rooi Valk chopper and, of course, the koeksuster - but all, all these things, pale completely into insignificance by comparison to what you are about to behold.

Men, Manne, trust me on this - for the man, vir die man - this is, dit is- the ultimate thing what you didn't know you needed until you just saw it and have unbelievably, unbelievably, lived without for so long...!!

And if you can like to be a proper 4x4 man, well then, this are definitely the thing for you...!!

Not another second longer................look no further

Don't know what I did wrong - I saw the pics when I previewed, and also when I look now!

It's a pity, the idea is classic, as folding shovel that doubles as a seat (when you attach legs)/barbie/rifle rest etc.

I got this great little fire brazier as a gift a coulpe of years ago and it goes on all our camping trips now. It comes from the flat brazier company http://flatbrazier.com .It packs flat and takes up very little space I wish I had a few extras at the GTG I could have sold a couple.
