There is a lot of familiarity in it, but there is also enough new direction to be a bloody good movie.
I think the sequels to come wont be as safe & will delve deeper into the light v dark.

Still, I loved it and cant wait to see it again.
I have at least 5 mates that have seen it multiple times already, so its not horrible in the least!
I'm looking forward to it, I've wanted a good Star Wars movie for about 30 years... Even if it is a remake for a new generation of fans. I'm going to take my boys who haven't really watched the first 6 and I don't think they'll care that much as they're too young to get the nuances of the stories, but they know who Anakin is and what he becomes. Still got time to get them through the others in the Machete order before we go.

And I've been told this makes Episode 1 look really really bad so that's a good thing!

      • Yeah the way they have done it is really good.
The special effects and CGI aren't over the top like that stupid prequel trilogy.
And the light sabre fights have gone back to the good old fashioned sword fight style instead of the stupid jumping around like ninjas on speed style ones in the prequels.

It really sits alongside the original trilogy very well & doesn't look out of place.

Plus as Bushbasher said, there are no gimmicky critters - and no bloody Jar Jar Binks.....

Everybody loves the Ewoks. They were going to eat Luke and Leia FFS! They're evil.

And put it this way, I havent met a fan of the original Trilogy yet that hasnt loved this one - even with all the positive hype which usually makes the movie a letdown!

Haha, yeah I actually wondered if they would be in this movie.
I dont mind the original Jim Henson stuffed critters, but the ones from the prequels were ridiculous.

Well, I was wrong. Saw the movie on Saturday. Silly alien beings everywhere. What a big let down. After all the hype it was the same tired story, same outcome. The bad guys were not so bad, they were as stupid as ever, can't shoot, blah blah blah. No wonder Harrison Ford dies (sorry to those that have not seen it yet) so he doesn't have to put up with such a lame story again.

As I said before. View it as a remake for the modern generation and to build the new characters and not for us originals. Beyond that it wasn't too bad and better than 1-3.

Lucas was hardly original with Star Wars though. Lucas openly acknowledges he borrowed the idea from Kurosawa's 1958 Samurai film The Hidden Fortress. It tells the story of a general and a princess behind enemy lines in feudal Japan, fighting their way to safely with the help of two bumbling peasants (r2-d2 and c3po? Sound familiar? There’s also a villainous general, Hyoe Tadokoro, with proto-Darth facial scars. The scene of the droids walking into the desert is a straight copy.

The brawl in the Cantina is straight from Yojimbo (1961), and the hiding-under-the-floor trick is a lift from its sequel, Sanjuro (1962). Striking amounts of plot and imagery in The Empire Strikes Back come from Derzu Uzala (1975), with its wanderings through the Siberian wilderness.

The Mos Eisley spaceport is pure Casablanca. Rick’s Café becomes the Cantina. Han demands 15,000 credits when Luke and Obi-Wan arrive at their safe port; boat passage out of Casablanca, oddly enough, costs 15,000 francs. Jabba was originally in A New Hope and the artwork originally had him wearing a Fez - an homage to Casablancas portly nightclub owner, Signor Ferrari

The final medal sequence is lifted directly from the Nazi Propaganda film 'triumph of the will' Luke, Han and Chewbacca walk through the massed hordes of Rebel Alliance extras like Hitler, Himmler and Viktor Lutze laying a wreath at the memorial for President Hindenburg, in Triumph of the Will’s equivalent sequence.(1935)

                          • So I've just left an evening that was amazing for me as a film lover to experience. Two films I'd never seen before shown on proper 35mm film!! This also included a live question and answer session with Quentin Tarantino, Thomas Kenneally (writer of Chant of Jimmy BlackSmith and Schindlers List), And director of Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith Fred Schepisi.
Quent came on first ( we are on first name terms now). Then Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith then about 30-40mins of them chatting just like they were in their living room and then Mad Dog Morgan.

Jimmy Blacksmith is still a powerful film and still applies today. The audience of about 500-800 were totally engrossed. The film really tries to make use of its location and doesn't try to demonise either side, doing its best to make you understand where the were coming from and the era they lived in. Hummus story of trying to fit in both the black and the white world is as touching as it is futile. Given that Tom E Lewis was 'discovered' in an airport dying back Darwin makes his performance even more standout. It's beautifully shot too, so seeing it on 35mm with the sound of the projector clicking away in front of an Australian audience was incredible.

The discussion was a great insight into the minds of the film makers and the process

Mad Dog Morgan had the audience laughing for the wrong reasons. The dialogue was unintentionally funny and Dennis Hopper's habit of turning up on set drunk or high and refusing direction showed. Though it did produce some intense moments. The film has to end with the best line in a film. "And don't forget the scrotum"

                            • Just saw the Hateful Eight... brilliant.

Even though the movie went for three hours, I never got bored or disinterested. Excellent script, characters and storyline. Tarantino has outdone himself again.
