    Re: At the Movies

    Transformers 2

Saw it the other night and loved it. I'm a big fan of Transformers, so seeing them on the big screen again in real action, they could do just about anything and I'd be a happy camper. I know lots of people reckon Michael Bay is crap and people have said the storyline is not there, but I think he is perfectly suited to directed this type of movie. Big action blockbuster with hot babes and giant robots smashing each other to bits - love it. Perfect popcorn movie where you can just sit back for 2 and a half hours and be totally swept away. Bugger the critics I say!

      Re: At the Movies

Ok another take on Transformers 2. Yes.... Megan Fox does provide some nice scenery, as does Aussie Isabel Lucas of Home and Away fame. Definitely a film for the boys. Ladies just won't understand....

I found the storyline difficult to follow. Either that or there was no real storyline. My mate, who's an avid fan, assures me though that there is quite an in depth story to the whole Autobots and Decepecon war. A pity if there is because it isn't well laid out in the film at all. All too often there were two massive robot guys smashing the living daylights out of each other and I couldn't tell who was freaking who. Wait! Who's that! Die bad guy!! Just a minute....... Aren't you good..... I think Optimus Prime was blue.... kinda....

There was too much of the film early in the piece that just seemed out of place and added nothing to the overall story. I think that this was some sort of attempt at character development but I found myself beginning to wonder just what my $10.00 had gotten me in to. This section slows the film to an absolute crawl which I found difficult to wade through.

Passing references are made about seemingly significant story elements, and I can only assume that avid fans need no further explanation, but I was left going......"huh?". You know, interesting stuff that you really want to know more about (can't say without ruining it) and assume will be fleshed out later in the film.... but never is. Are you just supposed to know????????

A lot of the action was 'too fast' I think which compounded the problem of not knowing which character you were looking at. For instance, some of Optimus Primes gang only had a very small amount of screen time in this film and when they did appear it was so intense that I didn't recognize them at all. So I found character development to be poor outside the main 'human' characters.

Seems to me that there is a good storyline hidden in the events of this film, but it wasn't dealt with the way it could have been.

You do get to see big robots smash each other to pieces though. Two stars just for that!!!! 8) 8)

          Re: At the Movies

I can totally understand your criticism IP - if I wasn't such a fan of the cartoon series and the concept in general I guess I would walk away thinking 'what the hell was all that about?' I never thought about all the people seeing it who wouldn't know what Cybertron is and about the Matrix of Leadership...

I purposefully sat near the back of the cinema because I knew from the first Transformers movie that if I sat too close it was difficult to follow. And yeah, I do agree, that side of it isn't helped with the Transformers being so complex, with so many moving parts and details etc.

Great review IP from a totally different perspective.

            Re: At the Movies

For us a night at the movies is anytime we want to watch one, our home theatre is quite comfy, we can eat, drink and pause for comfort breaks at our hearts desire. With a 10 foot screen and big leather reclining home theatre seats we watched the Blu-Ray version of Iron Man tonight. Now this is an enjoyable flick, plenty of humour and eye candy to look at.

We watched the latest Indian Jones movie the other week which was okay but I thought it was lacking the punch of Raiders Of The Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Not many people liked the Indian movie which was the second of the inital trilogy but I thought it was okay.

Home Theatre!!! Go away Mav!!!   One day.... One day........

Just going back to the previous knowledge Idea, How I didn't get what I think I was supposed to out of Transformers 2.

Does anyone here read Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt books? If not then you're seriously missing out. Anyhow a little while ago "Sahara" was made into a film and had Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt and also had Penélope Cruz and Steve Zahn in it. Now I freaking loved the film and to this day it's still a favorite of mine. Although the film cannot possibly go anywhere near all the events that happened in the book, it was still a good film. Bit camp in places but what the heck! The book has a very involved storyline and brings a lot of separate events tied nicely together at the end. Typical of Clive Cussler books of that time. So I knew what was going on in the film at all times. I knew what was happening and why. My girlfriend though got completely lost after the first 1/2 hour. A confederate Ironclad gets pummeled as it sails out a river mouth and that's about as far as she got. And I realise now that the film didn't actually explain things all that well, and if you hadn't read the book you wouldn't have got as much from the film as I think you were supposed to. The film did only take a small number of events from the book and watered down others, it had to, otherwise it would have been 50 hours long.... So my girlfriend hated it, but I loved it. Guess I didn't realise how much my pre knowledge was helping out when I watched it.

Anyway for the record Sahara is very good, but read the book first!!!! Guns, expensive boats, the Sahara Desert, saving damsels in distress, mystery, hardship and adventure.

My favourite Cussler novels are Dragon and Treasure. I'm not real keen on the later novels where he has basically retired Dirk and introduced the new Dirk and Summer. I just struggle to get into them. I enjoyed Sahara but that was because I love most of his novels BUT I can easily understand that people saw that and said what crap. But it's like that with a lot of movies where the movie doesn't do the novel justice. I loved the novel Clear and Present Danger but the movie only covered about a 1/3 of the novel so I was bitterly disappointed.

I loved the movie but I really dislike Penelope Cruz, damn girl there should be two eyebrows! How does she fool casting folk into thinking she is good looking?

                      Re: At the Movies

Clive Cussler's last really good book was Shock Wave, in my opinion. I agree his later novels aren't a patch on his earlier ones. He puts nowhere near the detail in his books that he used to.
Raymond E Feist is another culprit of that. Magician is simply the best book of any I've read so far, by a fair margin. Later books almost seem written by someone else.

                      Anyhow... Movies.

Cussler also had Raise the Titanic made into a film but I haven't been able to find that for quite some time. Apparently it wasn't the best film ever made though. Has anyone seen this?

Yep Seen it. A long time ago when I was in about year 7 it was on telly. Didn't think much of it back then and that's probably put me off chasing it. I've been reading a few Alistair MacLane novels recently and his stuff is great. Love the movies they made from his novels, especially Where Eagles Dare. That's where Schaffer comes from. Gotta love Clint!
