  • Price Guides Seem Way Off

Trying to by myself my first Prado, I've seen and driven a few, mostly diesels around 35k (which cleans me out) and diesels a few years older around 23k (which leave me a few dollars in the bank  . Trouble is, a well known price guide has all the older models about 3k-4k cheaper than what the market runs at. What's going on? Jim

Not wanting to start a conspiracy, most of the pricing guides seem to be strongly affiliated with the car sales industry.

The pricing may be in favour of the industry, not the consumer trying to get the best price for a trade or private sale.

Indicating lower pricing than actual real life values might be another tool for the car salesman to get the best margin on a sale.

    I might be wrong..............................

Price guides use 2 lots of data for info gathering,

One is trade in values, so if you have a leased vehicle, and you have to pay capital gains on what you make out of the vehicle compared to its trade in value, then what would happen to the trade in price vs new car price

Second data used, market value put on transfer of reg papaers when sold second hand, when you pay $8 for every $200 of a vehicle sold, who puts the "real" value on the paperwork every time

Thats why you can call it a "GUIDE"

When I ordered my GXL t/dsl back in November 2008 the dealer was prepared to only offer me $9,000 for my '98 GXL which I have owned since new. That's on a car that cost me $66,000 to drive away no more to pay (except insurance at @ $500).

They first offered me $10,000 but then dropped it by a grand because it needed to be "cleaned". The bloody thing is immaculate. I could easily get @ $15,000 for it here in Kal (privately). Consequently I still have the old girl and my 18 yr old is cruising around in it.

When we traded in our car on a new Prado we were offered all sorts of trade-in values from $13000 to $18000 (2002 model Pajero Exceed petrol - 80k) - now I know what you're thinking....gee - who would pay that for a P P P Pajero but I guess it just shows how the dealers play with the numbers. Dealers with a higher trade-in offer a smaller discount on the new car etc. We found a dealer with a higher trade-in and a willingness to offer the fleet discount so went with them but the car was in pretty good nick and was a 'good' example (tight steering, smooth, nothing falling off) - it was akin to being mugged being offered $13000 for it.

On the flip side - when my 10yr old Honda CR-V got hail damaged the insurance assessors stated that the trade-in value was appx $6000 (which was line ball with redbook) but that the repairs would be 7-8k and so they wrote it off and gave me the 'agreed' value stated on the policy of $12000 "Lucky you're with AAMI"

              Welcome to the forum Jim.

It sounds like you are having a similar experience to me when I was looking at buying a Prado. The thing I noticed also is that WA prices seemed to be more expensive than our eastern states counterparts.

Good luck in finding a Prado which suits. My opinion is buy the best and latest you can afford, as you can always save up your pennies later to adorn it with accessories

Well, thanks for the feedback. We're off to look at a privately offered 2002 Diesel, manual at the weekend. 500k round trip buy hey, who needs an excuse to spend a day in the wheat belt. Wife, picnic, Hilux, sunshine and a flagon of vino-gutso at the end of it, jeez it's good to be alive! I'll post up if I pick it up, I'll probably post anyway. Be lucky! Jim

Re: Price Guides Seem Way Off

The price "guides" you refer to are used more by the insurance industry to put a price (and then they use the lowest and adjust down) on your right-off and actually have NO bearing on what the car dealers will give you for a trade in.

Having worked in the insurance industry, also, I treat these books/guides like I would any piece of fiction.

If you think the price is too expensive, then don't pay it. Remember, the seller doesn't always set the price, the market does so pay what you feel is right.

Re: Price Guides Seem Way Off

Grrrrr! I had this lovely little TD manual lined up in a small wheat belt town, $22k with 150k on the clock, 2002 and someone beat me to it friday morning. So we spent today driving round the yards of Perth looking at Prados either well over priced or well over on mileage. I was tempted by one at $24k but 217k on the clock is rather a lot and it was a mine-site job too. I guess the search continues, maybe I'll have to chuck some more money at it. In the meantime my Hilux is getting suspicious, I reckon he knows his days are numbered...ttfn, be lucky, Jim
