  • So it's not just NSW being 'run' by the clueless then...

    http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensl ... -gl7v.html

Same arguments for and against - they just haven't caught up with the times though - any modern diesel 4WD will comfortably beat a 'family car' in the fuel consumption stakes.

Of course our cause isn't really helped by the sheer numbers of shopping trolleys on the roads (especially doing school pickup) but banning them from shopping areas ??? - I'm going to need a bigger trailer for those touring trips if I can't go to the shops ! Crazy policy making.

Maybe if they give us a few rego and other tax breaks we can afford a runabout AND a 4WD - until then I guess they're claiming that those that take a 4WD into a non-rural environment are doing so unecessesarily. Is this the kind of government we deserve ???

With only 20,000 signatures it is only a third of the size of the petition the government ignored about Daylight Savings so if they are consistent then it will be ignored as well.

      I actually agree with it.

It's not about the fuel economy, it's about the risk of running over children. I happen to know 2 people who have accidentally killed kids in 4WD's. Their lives have been misery since. If you spent time watching the manoeuvring ability of the majority of 4WD drivers in school pickup zones, you would be worried about your own kids too.

That said, much of the problem lies with a lack of adequate pick-up or set-down facilities at many schools, the 4WD just adds to the potential problems.

I think this is an investment that would reap far more rewards. My wife drops the kids off in 'her' car (our Prado) and the school (new and well planned) they attend has excellent drop off facilities (supervised) with a simple loop where you will never need to reverse or perform any manoeuvre that will uncessesarily risk those around you. If she was banned from driving it to the school she would have to take my Honda Accord and I would have to rattle around in the Prado for trips to the city, suburbs or wherever my client happens to be. Maybe we should buy another car eh ? - that would be better for the environment... The reality is that we all have multiple purposes for our vehicles and excluding some uses for some vehicles seems too abitrary and unfair to me but that's not downplaying the inherant dangers.

I hear you on the accidents - I'm sooooo careful in the driveway - always make the kids get on the front deck where I can see them and account for them - but in a flash they could be down on the driveway to pick up a toy or stone or something... I always crawl in and out of the driveway too in case because I'd hate to think there was something I could have done to prevent an accident but didn't through neglect. I guess my point is that there's recognition of risk or ignoring risk but ultimately there's always risk and how much are you prepared to sacrifice to bring that risk down ?

Maybe making rear cameras compulsory would be a good and pragmatic move (they're not that expensive to add). The key though is to make people more aware of the inherant dangers of driving and the increased risk they pose if they are driving a larger vehicle (not just 4WD). The criteria they are proposing is simplistic and obviously flawed and it's that that makes it sound ill thought out. How about compulsory additional training for a vehicle over a certain size or height or weight ? - the test is just too easy as it is.

With you on the doof doof stereos there.... AND people wearing hats while driving - should be an instant ban....

Actually, I don't think the hats themselves are responsible for the driving style. I see them as a warning system for other drivers.

A mate once said if we were to ban Volvos then two things would happen. Volvo drivers would be less obvious in normal cars (until they did something stupid) and we would need to find another car to hate vehemently!

And if you are going down the fuel economy route - you may as well add any car with an engine of more than 4 cylinders (I know its a generalised statement, so I don't want fuel economy figures thrown at me - I am just pointing out the ridiculousness of the petition).
