FJ in Alice

    FJ in Alice

    I was at the local servo on Sunday when I looked up and there was an FJ Cruiser pulling in. It is registered in the NT but it is a left hand drive car. I quickly grabbed the camera from the glove box and took these two shots.

          What happens to those LHD cars that the yanks bring in when they're working at the space base? Do they send them back or sell them locally?

            They are covered by a SOFA agreement which basically means that they cannot be sold to Australians if the owners want to sell it here it must be sold to another American residing here in Alice. Otherwise the car must return to the USA with the owner, the shipping is free for the owners when they bring them here and return to the USA.

              It wasn't me!

              Actually I wish it was, but with the exchange rate you can probably get an FJ 'down there' for about $35K (without knowing anything about import taxes.)

                So given my mum's a yank, can I get her to buy one which I then buy off her? She's been here as a resident for 40 years...does that matter??

                  The SOFA agreement only covers those Americans that come down to work here and are not residents so the answer is no you cannot get one that way.

                    I actually thought the yanks gave that privilege away some years ago now due to the increasing costs and due to safety concerns about left-handed drive cars.

                    When I first lived in Alice Springs a while back, there were heaps of left-hand drive cars around. It used to be a little disconcerting when you would pull up alongside another vehicle and look across to see no-one in the (normal) driver's seat!

                        Nope that is still the norm here, only US Government employees can take up this benefit.
