With the general adoption of some standards like SATA, etc, it is no longer the challenge it used to be. The main thing to be aware of is that all your selections have to be compatible with each other.
Completely agree OGG, it usually is straight forward like you say. But not always. When I was a tech I had that many people coming in tearing their hair out with obscure glitches and about ready to junk their new gear it wasn't funny. Mainly, long after the fact, I think that had a lot to do with the gear we were selling out the door at the time but that's another issue. The glitch I suffer with my RAM and Motherboard was only becoming apparent in the weeks after I'd bought all my gear, I guess because the components were fairly new items. So the comment you make about checking for incompatibilities is worth reinforcing. Online forums are usually the best source of info for reading about other people's experiences with certain components not working so well together. It's the glitches that occur maybe once a fortnight that really get you mental, simply because you often have to wait a fortnight to see if the glitch reoccurs. :?

I do not want to stick the PC industry with any sort of unjust accusations, But I have heard customers being led straight down the garden path in PC shops. Once in particular amounted to a salesperson offloading old gear but selling it as hot off the press. I actually intervened in that case and got a bollocking from the salesguy, understandably, but the poor woman was grateful. So I think that doing your own reading is important. If you have someone to help you at least buy and research the components then definitely do that. I have to say too though, that I've been into some PC shops staffed by very good people.

Only thing I could suggest is try and stick to main well known brands as already stated. Simply because there will be a lot of write ups about the gear and a lot of people posting up their own experiences with it in forums. Although..... ASUS have produced a few dogs..... But generally I agree you won't go wrong with ASUS motherboards. Maybe also have a quick chat to the guys in the techbay rather than the salesguy. I have found out some good info that way.

I got a Mac Pro about 2 yrs ago, now running OS 10 on the mac side and Win 7 64 bit for the 8 gig ram and WIN 7 32 bit for programs that don't like the 64 bit. The way I see it this machine can be upgraded with easy plugin HDDs, memory, graphic cards and anything you like, no cables to muck around with, is extremely well built and will last me for many years justifying the 4 grand price (plus monitor). My son got a Macbook about the same time and the onboard graphics card bit the bullet five minutes after the warranty ran out and is not user replaceable and will cost about 80% of a new one to repair. So if you don't need portability this machine is worth considering.
