My GXL is 12 months old this week. Got the insurance renewal and, although they have dropped the value by $6,000, they want $90 more to insure it compared to last year. And the basic excess has also jumped up by $100 to $400. I have not had a claim for accident damage in over 11 years with this company and they have always looked after me. I think I have had 3 windscreens across both cars in all this time.
When I rang to confirm the figures I was told the increase is due to the excessive costs associated with repairing modern cars with all the technology. I can understand that expensive cars are dearer to repair but what about my safe driving record (max no claim bonus)? I said that obviously the increase in basic excess has also been introduced to cover those extra costs so you are basically hitting us with double increase.
The operator also went on to talk about stolen cars and the area that I live. So when I asked why, if for the past 5 years running car theft generally has been on a downward trend and that locally our rate of car theft is almost zero, haven't our premiums come down? Most stolen "cars" in the figures are actually not stolen cars but stolen trailers and unlicenced trail bikes - neither of which should have much of an impact on the insurance policies of car owners. Those clunkers stolen around here are generally uninsured and owned by indigenous folk who don't really care about insurance or registration.
As usual, they won't answer when they know that you that they are just bullshi%%ing!
Time to shop for a new insurer.
