    Re: Who gives blood?

Yep, being doing it for a number of years, and always make sure that I go back every 3 months for whole blood donation cause i am CMV negative. This means my blood can be used for babies with no consequences to them.

About 80% of the population have CMV (Cytomegalovirus) which is always present in your blood and is no good for a newborn baby as their immune system is not developed yet. So only approx. 20% of the population are CMV negative and when you factor the low numbers of donors it doesn't leave much for the young ones. If you do have CMV you can still donate though.

Also my employer is part of the corporate donation plan so I get time off work to go and give during the week which makes life easier.

Encourage people you know to go and at least try it once and see if they don't feel better about themselves after doing it...

I suffered from CMV about 8 or 9 years ago and was off work sick for about a month. Bloody horrible it was if you react to it but most people do not.

        Re: Who gives blood?

I have donated every 3 months for the past 25 years it is a social outing with a few of my mates . We then go out for a few drinks afterwoods thinking that we have less blood in our system for the booze to take affect quicker .

          Re: Who gives blood?

Tried to a while ago but due to being in the UK during the BSE "mad cow" period was knocked back.
Will have to enquire as to whether or not there was a time frame on the ban.

Kudos to all the PP people who do donate.

I used to donate every 3-6mths but stopped due to a painful "Mistake" by a nurse on the red cross bus......
Have intended to go back to the actual blood bank in Newcastle but was crook until 6 mths ago so i would be wasting their time at the moment ........

                Re: Who gives blood?

Just got home from donating today. Nice to spend 30 minutes or so away from the heat in the airconditioned mobile trailer. The staff are always friendly and grateful and you get a cuppa and a biscuit for your trouble. Such an easy way to help out others.

Yep, been donating for over 30 years. Bookings have been the go in WA for several years but most times I find you still have to wait at least 15 minutes past the booking time. I guess that's a good thing in a way, at least plenty of other people are donating. I always try & book my time for really early in the morning. Really it's because if you are one of the first, there's less waiting time but I tell the nurses the reason is I like to get in early whilst the needles are still clean and sharp

                                So, do you?

Not everyone can but for those who can it's a worthwhile cause, you never know when you might need to make a withdrawal, so make a few deposits while you can.

Red Cross are now in possession of another pint of my A+ top shelf, all natural, organic, free range blood

Had a free blood pressure check, a little lie down and nice orange juice and a slice of cake, pretty easy sort of donation.

                                Cheers Andrew
