  • good samaritans car burns to the ground NSW

2 PP members rigs (me and ninpo) went for an over night stay up at stockton last night.
we thought whilst up that way we would check out samurai beach, neither of as having been there before.
found the entry and down we go.
just as we got on to the very very soft sand (much softer than stocko was) we past and laughed at a jeep trying to get out (bogged down as we past).
did a loop of the beach, but bailed at seeing so not to pleasant people (nudist beach).
we took a run at the exit, and made the rise, then just needed to follow the sand track to the track back to the road.
trouble was about to be found.
we came up to were the jeep was bogged and we were in his tracks, so needed to move across to the other set (2 tracks wide),
and i started bogging down (hadn't let any air out as we were able to keep moving).
we then notice what looked like steam or light grey thin smoke coming from a jackaroo that was trying to recover the bogged jeep.
we got out and pointed out the steam/smoke, and the reply was "we have overheated the transmission".
but then we went and had a closer look and then a flame could be seen in the drivers inner guard.
    OH SH--.
yelled out to the other vehicles coming up behind for all fire extinguishes, but to no avail.
then it was a quick dash to let down our tyres and move our/and other vehicles back.
ran back to help push the jeep back, but the driver had no idea.
got the jeep away after yelling instructions numerous times.
then it was a quick rush to save keys and wallets from the jackaroo, and just move away and let it go.
we felt so bad for the owners as all they could do was call the fire brigade and wait,
and being we were still on the sand, wait longer for smaller 4wd units to get there.
it took 20 mins of full flames for the 4wd fire truck to get there by which time it was finished.
it's just wrong that the people were trying to do the right thing and help someone out, and they end up losing their car,
and the bogged vehicle drives away after the flames have finished. it's just not right.

It sucks to think that can happen to anyone who is willing to help out a fellow 4wder in trouble, just goes to show you how valuable a few more fire extinguishers could have been. At least they still have wallets and phones, not that that makes it any better. cheers samo

Stories like this show the importance of always carrying a good quality extinguisher (or two). At the end of the day they have to be thankful no one was injured, and hope insurance will look after them. As snaga said, the least the Jeep could do was offer a lift.
Imagine the heartache if the Jackaroo was holidaying at that time?

Does anyone here carry a second extinguisher in the cabin?

I always carry 2 extinguishers. So many people take them for granted thinking it wont happen to them.

            Got any pics??

So was anyone able to work out the exact cause of the fire? Had something split and fluid igniated, a collection of grasses or something else...

If you stopped to lend a hand instead of laughing at someone else's expense, this might not have happened. :|

HI ALL.I don,t know about the laughing but I think were all been guilty of a giggle at some time over the years, anyway if the sand is that soft your not going to stop and say hows it going your going to find some firm stuff yourself then get a plan together to get him out.Other wise you,ll end up with a wagon train. because jeeps are the only 4wd to have been stuck in sand and every jeep driver is out to intentionally burn down other cars.

Re: good samaritans car burns to the ground NSW

Fire extinguishers are handy but, if the fire is due to an electrical fault, you need to be able to isolate the power.

I had an under dash fire once and it would not go out. Figured it out, finally, and ripped the leads from the battery with my bare hands. Then the fire was able to be extinguished.

I also had an underbonnet fire at a service station many years ago. Caused by fuel line fracturing off carby (Weber) and basically had a flame thrower going underneath. That was able to be put out by 3 large commercial extinguishers, but not until all the wiring and plastic was gone. And my hands got burnt on the hot bonnet.
