  • Cleaning recovery straps

Does anyone have any suggestions on cleaning recovery straps? Anything not to do? Over the weekend we were at Levuka 4WD park with friends. As we have had so much rain, the tracks were extremely muddy and slippery, and only the big trucks went out, the rest of us gave it one go and decided that enough was enough The recovery and equaliser straps are filthy! I have hosed them down to get off all of the mud (and no doubt, cow pats) but they are still really very dirty.

    Re: Cleaning recovery straps

I clean mine in warmish soapy water and then rinse out in clean warmish water.

Hang them up to dry out over a couple of days, out of the sun. I don't know if the UV effects them, but I always dry mine out away from the sun just in case.
One thing that kills them is grit getting embedded between the fibres. It is well worth cleaning them well IMO.

I've been told that you can use some washing detergent to help clean them out but you need to make sure you wash out the soap afterwards and ensure they are dry before storage.

I am the missus! I ended up taking them down to the laundromat to run them through the commercial front loader, in cold water, without detergent. They seem to have cleaned up well, I didn't use detergent as I thought that the detergent could lead to degregation of the fibres.

                  Re: Cleaning recovery straps

Wouldn't the Gerni force the abrasive gunk into the strap out of sight?

Maybe it doesn't really matter if abrasive sand etc is forced inside the fibres???? We only get about ten or so snatches out of the straps before they are buggered.
