Very OT - purchasing a Mazda 3

I understand this is very off topic however I am hoping to us some of this forums knowledge to help me out here. We are about to buy a Mazda 3 SP25 for my Wife to use as her daily driver. Retail, these cars go for just under $35,000. What would peope use as a bench mark to try and negotiate dealers down to? Is there a percentage that people use and normally find they are able to get dealers to agree with?

Whenever I have purchased new cars I always try and get 15% off. It is very hard to give a set figure though cos it just depends on how popular the car is, whether the salesperson is on target for the month yet etc etc.

Where you position yourself to try and get that % discount is up to you, most just want a figure to take to their boss, so I just give them a really low figure and let them come back. I wish they would just bring the boss out, I am sure they just go out the back for a coffee :lol:

After you have been to a couple or three dealers you get a feel for how low they will go then you can hit them for things you want including for free, mats/bonnet protectors etc. a lot the time they will be happy to throw these items in and the all important 'Full' tank of fuel.

Best tactic I have found is to appear pretty laid back and let them know you are in no rush to purchase, it is surprising how many times you get a phone call back from a dealer at the end of the month when they are obviously trying to hit their targets. If all else fails tell them you have to talk to your boss/handbrake/minister for finance just be prepared to walk away and try another dealer.

The best price you can get is the one you are most comfortable paying

My neighbour just sold a 10 month old one of these (She got a company car) for just over $23k

Thanks for the reply Dave, that is a similar tactic to what I have been using. Yes that is a lot signature but I guess you get what you pay for a bit. You can get the base model 3 auto for very low 20's atm but this is their go fast one (not the mps). However, the price certainly just keep belting me over the head. Just waiting to hear back from a couple of dealers in the city and see what they can do. Then I reckon I will do nothing till the end of the month and see what happens.

My wife and I have just bought a new Subaru Impreza. We were also interested in the Mazda 3 Maxx but choose the Subaru because it was AWD and had a 5 Star safety rating(mazda maxx is the base model 4 stars). The Subaru was on speical so they would'nt move on the price but we managed to get a better interest rate and free window tinting and all we had to do is threaten to go with bank finance and not the dealer finance. Car dealers make more money from there finance then the profit of selling a new car.
