  • Wrong business

    I'm in the wrong business.

Advert in today's Kalgoorlie Miner for Easter tag along tour - 4 days Esperance - Mt Ragged - Israelite Bay - Baxter Cliffs - Esperance = $799 per car.

You provide everything incl 4wd, food, camping gear, fuel for 800kms.

Has anyone experienced any worthwhile value for money tag alongs?

    Re: Wrong business

no experience with tag along tours but $800 for 4 days where you supply everything seems a bit steep, $200 per day , say 8 hours of driving per day works out to be $25 an hour to follow someone , well thats an average pay rate, bit steeep i reckon (just my opinion though)cheers samo

Consider his costs i.e. liability insurance etc.

        Re: Wrong business

I went on a trip with my club last year across the Simposn. We travelled from Adelaide to Mt Dare independantly of them as they had commenced on a three week trip and we where only involved for two. When heading across the Simpson there was another group about a day behind us. We saw them at Birdsville and then again at Innaminka and Tiboburra. One of the kids in that group was playing around with my son and i got to talking to the dad. They where on a tag along tour with a mountainous group and paying about $225 a day from memory for a two week trip. Same deal where you provide everything nearly (vehicle, fule, food, equipment, vehcile spare parts). The things you did not need to provide was recovery equipment and a sat phone. You sign a waiver up front that all damage to your vehicle is your own responibility so they become really just a guide who will be able to contact outside help in case of a nasty situation.

          Re: Wrong business

I guess there are people out there that just want the security of being part of an organised and prepared group, maybe some who never venture off road to any great degree that simply want someone else to coord the journey, plan routes, choose campsites, have all the 4WD "savvy", etc. Relying on someone who has been there, knows all the proper routes, CAN NAVIGATE SUCCESSFULLY, someone who can be relied upon when things get a little tricky, know how to recover with safety, etc.

If you were going to be taught some good stuff along the way like how to perform recoveries, campsite cooking and etiquette, by someone who knows where all the little pretty spots are hidden, etc then I guess $200 a day doesn't sound too bad.

HI, I have just got back home after leading a day trip for our 4WD club, i had 14 vehicles following me, @$225/vehicle that would be over 3 grand. I must be stupid doing it for nix. Definately in the wrong business.

            Cheers Andrew

Is it all about $$$ or is there still some satisfaction in the love and fulfilment in seeing real enjoyment in a fellow Aussie?

If we get anymore rain down here before easter it will be money well spent to be skull dragged through the 800km of mud and slush for the duration of the journey.
Seriously a good guide who has intimate knowledge of the area would make the value of the trip well worth the money.
Entertaining the kids would probably cost close to the same by the time you do the movies, dvd hire, McChuckers, new toys, etc.
