We survived Cyclone Ului

Cyclone Ului came through on Sat night, we only got power back on Tuesday night (70 hours without power and a 2 yo daughter - not easy to explain why Dora wont be on TV.) These are a few photos we took during the storm and the destruction that followed. I was considering posting this in trip reports as it was like being on an off road adventure with the amount of debris that littered the roads throughout the area. We are in the hardest hit area in Airlie Beach where wind gusts were recorded of 200 kph. All in all we got out of it fairly well. Had to move the Prado during the peek of the Storm as a 4 meter branch of a gum tree had fallen on the roof of the house and was hanging dangerously close to the bonnet of the prado. The remainder of the tree ended up stratigically falling between our house and the neighbours. The husky chainsaw has never worked so hard in its life. The majority of Damage in the area has been to the boats. Most of the boats were moved to a so called safe mooring. the pictures will tell the rest of the story.

PS. my wish list has changed - my next investment will be a 3 way fridge freezer and a generator.

Very nice of the tree to avoid hitting either house... good to hear no one was hurt.

Must be heart breaking to see your boat washed up on shore or against the rocks like that. Even worse for the people who's $220K boat can't be located after the cyclone :shock:

Glad you came through relatively unscathed. We got quite a bit of wind here in Rockhampton that night, destroying my pergola. Interestingly, we also seemed to get more rain down here than most of the (directly) effected areas.

We got through ok. I noticed the pic of a car driving under a power pole leaning over. Lots of that going on in Mackay. Are people in that much of a hurry that they will risk death???

HI ALL. My daughter and two girl friends flew into AIRLIE BEACH the thursday before Ului hit ,a few worring phone calls before it hit but they were ok.Turns out they did they clubing on the friday night just in case a bit of a pre Ului bash by the sounds of it,and apart from the weather at times it wasn,t a bad weekend she says, thats if your not a parent back at home worried and sleep deprived.CHEERS TINKERA

The Power pole was a bit of a worry it appeared to be only held up by the wires. The stupid thing was that it was only sight seers that were going through. Still a fair few people with out power up this way has Mackay been fully restored yet. I was at the VMR on Wednesday watching some pore buggers house boat being mulched by an excavator. It must be heart breaking to stand by and watch someone crush your life.
