  • Broken windscreen woes

Took the brand new Landcruiser Workmate troopy out to Rawlinna for the Nullabor Muster this past weekend. The vehicle performed faultlessly and that sweet V8 t/dsl is a mighty worker, pulls like a train but just as happy to tootle around at not much more than idle speed.

But, on the way back to Kalgoorlie, whilst passing some slower traffic I copped a stone to the windshield. Crack, nice big line right in line with your face and extending halfway across the screen.

No worries, ring up and booked her in to get a new screen. Bring her straight in the guys says.

When we get the truck in there the bloke says that because it's the "new" model - dual airbags, adjustable steering wheel, CD player, etc - it's going to be around 3 months until they can get screens into Australia!

    AARRGGHH!!

      Re: Broken windscreen woes

I would check around about this...something does not sound right unless all the ones they in country were used up in Perth? But I know from reading some place that a lot of the windscreens are made in Australia for the Toytotas and other models. I would do some calling around.

        Re: Broken windscreen woes

I replaced my windscreen about 3 weeks ago (a week before the hail storm) and couldn't get a genuine screen either.

When I asked why...the bloke at Toyota said "because Aussies aren't stupid enough to pay $1080.00 + fitting for a new one". I wen't no s*&t!!

Fitted and API glass for $350.00 fitted and tinted. It does have the typical heat/laminating waves of cheaper screens if you look through it sideways (Can't notice it looking forward), but hell for the price and the fact that the last one lasted 10 months I can't see why you would buy anything else.

We might have some luck with Deans Auto glass as they reckon they have a secret stash!

              Re: Broken windscreen woes

Was travelling in the NSW snowys in Feb and got a cracked windscreen on the Alpine Way from a motor bike going flat out , but when pulled up at some road works were they were resealing the road and got talking to the stop/go man. Told him what had just happened and he told me that if I had said it had happened as a result of the new road works I would just have to see the site manager and he would give me a chit for a new windscreen. So if you are driving along a new stretch of road and get a crack ring the local council and tell them and they will put you in touch with the mob that fixed the road for a replacement windscreen. I did not do this as the stop/go man was in fact the site manager ( bugger ) , But this is what he told me happens . Cheers Digger

                Folks
Here's another one that works if you have a cracked screen, find a concrete agitator truck from a major company, get the rego number, time and date ring the local branch and bingo new screen.

Is the windscreen different on the 'update' V8 models. (ie: The V8's with the airbags, etc - Post mid 2009 from memory).
I've had to replace a couple of windscreens on my 70 series V8 (but the non airbag version - 2008 model), and it was exactly
the same windscreen as the previous 1985 onwards 75/78/79 etc models. Maybe it's now 'bonded' in place with urethane
like other more modern vehicles rather than held in with the rubber seals like all older versions.

Just an enquiring mind, as I haven't seen one of the update/airbag models up close to have a look..............
