  • Toyota to temporarily halt sales of Lexus GX 460 (Prado 150)

    from news.com

TOYOTA Motor Corp is temporarily halting sales of the 2010 Lexus GX 460 after Consumer Reports issued a rare "Don't Buy" warning amid concerns the large SUV has handling problems that could cause it to roll over during sharp turns.
The Japanese automaker said today it had asked dealers to temporarily suspend sales of the SUV while it conducts its own tests on the GX 460.

"We are taking the situation with the GX 460 very seriously and are determined to identify and correct the issue Consumer Reports identified," said Mark Templin, Lexus vice president and general manager.

The decision to stop selling the SUV is the latest blow to Toyota's tarnished safety reputation after the recall of millions of cars and trucks over accelerator pedals that are too slow to retract or that can become stuck under floor mats. The GX 460 is not covered by the pedal recalls.

Toyota said about 6000 have been sold since the vehicle went on sale in late December.

Consumer Reports is closely read by many car buyers before choosing a new car or truck. In January, it pulled its "recommended" rating on eight vehicles recalled by the automaker due to faulty accelerator pedals.

The magazine said the Lexus problem occurred during tests on its track. In a standard test, the driver approached a turn unusually fast, then released the accelerator pedal to simulate the response of an alarmed driver. This caused the rear of the vehicle to slide outward.

In normal cases, the electronic stability control should quickly correct the loss of control and keep the SUV on its intended path. But with the GX 460, the stability control took too long to adjust, which could cause a rollover accident if one of the sliding wheels were to strike the curb or another obstacle, said Gabriel Shenhar, Consumer Reports' senior auto test engineer who was one of four testers who experienced the problem.

The magazine said it is not aware of any reports of the GX 460 rolling over. It tested two separate vehicles, both of which experienced the problem, but neither rolled over.

The warning label on the model will remain until Toyota addresses the handling issue with the seven-seat SUV.

Templin said in a statement he was "confident that the GX meets our high safety standards" and said Toyota's engineering teams were testing the GX using Consumer Reports' specific parameters. Lexus will provide a loaner car for any customer who bought a 2010 GX 460 and is concerned about driving the vehicle, Templin said.

Customers who have questions or concerns about the GX 460 can call Lexus at US number (800) 255-3987.

The "Don't Buy" label is unlikely to hurt Toyota's broader sales since the GX 460 accounts for a fraction of its total, said Erich Merkle, president of the consulting company Autoconomy.com in Grand Rapids, Michigan. However, it comes at an unfortunate time as the automaker tries to move beyond the recalls.

"I think it will have a bigger impact from a negative-PR perspective than from an actual sales perspective," Mr Merkle said.

The GX 460, which starts at about $56,000, is built on the same platform as the Toyota 4Runner. However, Consumer Reports said the problem did not occur during similar tests on the 4Runner. According to Toyota's website, both vehicles are about 1.8m tall but the GX 460 is about 7.6cm taller.

Consumer Reports said the last vehicle to receive such a safety warning was the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Limited, a large SUV. In that case, testers said the wheels lifted off the road during standard avoidance-manoeuver tests, which also posed a rollover risk.

At the time, Mitsubishi disputed the magazine's findings and did not make any modifications to the vehicle, Mitsubishi spokesman Dan Irvin said. The designation appeared to have little effect on the Montero's sales, which increased overall during the second half of 2001.

The Montero remained on sale in the US until 2007 and continues to be sold overseas as the Mitsubishi Pajero.

Toyota shares traded in the US fell 52 cents to $US79.03

Toyota to temporarily halt sales of Lexus GX 460 (Prado 150)

        What will be next?????

WASHINGTON – Toyota Motor Corp. is temporarily halting sales of the 2010 Lexus GX 460 after Consumer Reports issued a rare "Don't Buy" warning amid concerns the large SUV has handling problems that could cause it to roll over during sharp turns.

The Japanese automaker said Tuesday it had asked dealers to temporarily suspend sales of the SUV while it conducts its own tests on the GX 460.

"We are taking the situation with the GX 460 very seriously and are determined to identify and correct the issue Consumer Reports identified," said Mark Templin, Lexus vice president and general manager.

The decision to stop selling the SUV is the latest blow to Toyota's tarnished safety reputation after the recall of millions of cars and trucks over gas pedals that are too slow to retract or that can become stuck under floor mats. The GX 460 is not covered by the pedal recalls.

But it reflects Toyota's attempt to respond more quickly to safety concerns after federal investigators accused the automaker of dragging its feet on recalls to address the faulty gas pedals. Toyota faces a $16.4 million fine from the Transportation Department and has until April 19 to decide whether to contest the penalty or accept it.

Toyota said about 6,000 GX 460s from the 2010 model year have been sold since the vehicle went on sale in late December and an estimated 1,600 of the SUVs are at dealerships.

Consumer Reports is closely read by many car buyers before choosing a new car or truck. In January, it pulled its "recommended" rating on eight vehicles recalled by the automaker due to faulty gas pedals.

Re: Toyota to temporarily halt sales of Lexus GX 460 (Prado 150)

I wonder what level of testing the consumer mags do that goes above and beyond what Toyota must already be doing. Seems they are focussing on a pretty basic test; surely Toyota have already test this point. The consumer mag wouldn't be overhyping this... would they?

I guess if the outcome is a more responsive stability control, that's gotta be a good thing.

Re: Toyota to temporarily halt sales of Lexus GX 460 (Prado 150)

This is another public relations nightmare for Toyota. How does it come out cleanly from the current situation which is simply a case of a magazine riding on Toyota’s current sensitivity to quality concerns, to get some free global advertising worth millions for the magazine. If Toyota defends itself, the media will scream it is not taking the reports seriously.
Of course anyone who has ever driven at 10/10ths in a controlled environment (ie on a track) will tell you that stability control in any car, whether it be a Corolla or a Ferrari, is useless in a back-off oversteer scenario (they might also tell you that you should be locked up if you drive at 10/10ths on a public street!) The correct reaction to back-off oversteer is to smoothly apply power to shift some weight, & therefore grip, back to the rear wheels (and of course steer). Stability control works on brakes and can reduce power, not increase it. Its great for preventing loss of control if a sudden swerve occurs or for preventing oversteer during harsh acceleration. But in a back-off oversteer scenario, if the stability control was to apply any braking to the front wheels to try to control the vehicle, this will compound the loss of control. A day at a track will also convince a driver that back-off oversteer only occurs when you are traveling at a ridiculous speed for the conditions (eg wet) and a given corner. Even with stability control at normal speeds, its effectiveness is limited by the grip of the tyres. Swerve or put any vehicle into a corner at the wrong speed and the computer can only do what it can with the available grip. Exceed the grip and the vehicle is around a pole while the computer goes through the motions.
Apologies for the essay but the dishonesty of this report is wrong. That magazine could have taken any car fitted with stability control and achieved the same finding but Toyota is a sitting duck for an article like this.

              Cheers

              Dave

Re: Toyota to temporarily halt sales of Lexus GX 460 (Prado 150)

Consumer reports is the bible for Auto sales in the US. They do vehicle regulation & extensive testing well above that of the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A lot of people even wait untill May to buy a car after the auto guide is released. With everything Toyota is dealing with here in the US I think it's a good idea to pull it now to save face to find a solution early as opposed to creating a larger PR nightmare or a related accident involving a GX460.

Another thing I should mention here is that the US government now owns a portion of General Motors and some believe the NHTSA is gunning for Toyota who once had the #1 market share, but has fallen to #3 after problems in the US market.

Re: GX 460 /Prado sales stopped in the USA

I think more of the issue is that the traction control activated too late and created an unsafe body roll resulting in an over steer situation. I think this can be resolved with a computer flash lowering the tolerances of the lateral G's or replacing the gyroscopic sensor with a new replacement.

It seems like US automakers are becoming pansies and not allowing drivers to, well..... drive. All vehicles sold in the US are now required to have traction control systems this year. I believe SUV's were required to have them 2 years ago along with Tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) as a direct result of the Ford Explorer/Firestone tyre problems.

Re: GX 460 /Prado sales stopped in the USA

                    More from AFP www.news.com.au

JAPANESE automaker Toyota suspended sales of the Lexus GX 460 sport utility vehicle worldwide today, one day after halting deliveries in North America due to a roll-over risk.

"The company has decided to suspend the SUV's sales worldwide, which means also in Russia and Middle East after North America," said Toyota spokeswoman Mieko Iwasaki, in reference to the other markets where the vehicle is sold.

Toyota suspended the sales of the GX in the United States and Canada after US magazine Consumer Reports gave the SUV a rare "Don't Buy: Safety Risk" rating, the latest blow to the reputation of the embattled Japanese auto giant.

When pushed to its limits, the rear of the GX "slid out until the vehicle was almost sideways before the electronic stability control system was able to regain control," the magazine said.

Having now suspended the SUV's sales worldwide, Toyota said it will work on analysing potential safety risks in the model which has sold 6,000 units.

"The company is examining the possible problem and will decide what remedies should be taken," Iwasaki said.

Does anyone know if this will affect the Aussie Prado ? Surely it's the same system worldwide as they all come from the same factory.

Apparently it only affects the V8 versions (i.e. the USA Lexus GX460), and not the locally sold Prado's, according to a statement from Toyota Australia. The issue appears to be in the way the V8 and its transmission interact with the traction control system.
