  • The Earth moved for me

I was out the front of my place this morning at 08:17 when it hit. I watched as the ground visibly moved and it looked like a rippling wave as it passed through our street. The Prado rocked side to side, as did my camper that I was doing some work on. All the windows rattled and the colourbond roofs groaned as the 5.0 magnitude quake cut across Boulder and through Kalgoorlie. People ran out into the street.

There must have been a couple of dozen after shocks, including one just a few minutes ago. Some of the older buildings in Boulder copped damage - mostly a few of the old 2 storey pubs (circa 1900) lost verandahs and roofs, with many old brick walls crumbling to the street. A few locals are upset because their watering holes have been shut until engineers can examine the damage.

Heard about this on the radio. It's a decent sized quake for Aus!

Anyone else reckon over the last couple of years there seems to have been a lot more big earthquakes around the world?

Our perception is there are more. Reality is that it has been going on for 100s of millions of years and will continue to do for a long time to come.

Maybe it's because the media reports from all over the globe now where as 25 yrs ago nobody would have given a toss about an earthquake in China or Bolivia. Plus the fact that the geos can now measure the tremors from any part of the planet.

        Bushbasher,

the ripple you saw was called a P-wave. You should consider yourself lucky. I lived in S. California for 16 years and hundresd of earthquakes and have never seen seen one. It's kind of like the elusive green flash at sunset.

Re: The Earth moved for me

I was in Tokyo a few years ago when a relatively minor (for Japan) quake hit. I was sleeping off a heavy night and thought the wife was kicking the bed to get me up! Eyes firmly shut I yelled "go away" but the bed kept shaking. Looked up at the window and everything was blurry, didn't think I drank THAT MUCH! Anyway everyone was running around getting their special gear together so I wandered outside and joined them. Very disorienting even without the aid of a hangover, or so I am told. ops:

Well, almost 2 weeks after the big one and we are still have after-shocks. Had a little one today around 5.30pm and one on Friday at around 8.00pm that went 2.6 on the dial. The week before we had one at 2.9 on the scale.

Isn't the superpit always the cause of all problems out that way?

Maybe they should put all of them in the superpit and fill it in... all problems solved!
