  • Moving from Brisbane to Canberra

Jeff and I are starting to talk seriously about a move to Canberra. I had a phone interview in my speciality at a Canberra hospital today, and they will contribute to moving costs. Jeff will get a good payout when he leaves his job here as he had been there longer than 10 yrs. He is in IT, and he is a programmer, so we can't imagine he will have too many problems getting a job. However, we are starting to think about living costs, and other expenses. The rent we would receive for our house here would just aboout cover our mortgage payments, but I am aware that rent in Canberra is quite expensive. I've been looking at the Allhomes website for rental properties in Weston, Woden and Tuggeranong, it seems that $500 is about an average for a 3br house. Is this fairly standard for most of Canberra? Where don't we want to live?

Also, commuting costs are another thought. Currently, I commute in the Prado (to go towards the kms for the lease) and Jeff commutes on his motorcycle. Given that the winters in Canberra are a hell of a lot colder than here, do many people commute on bikes in Winter? Are we better off buying a second small car? I have heard that there are major parking problems at the hospital that I have interviewed at, so I would probably not be driving the Prado anyway.

Are there many PPers in Canberra or surrounds? The ACT section of the forum is very quiet, do the Canberra PPers (if there are any) join up with the NSW crew?

    Any other thoughts or suggestions?

      Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!
That will be an icy shock from Darwin. Canberra is a lovely place. My sister has been over there for about 15 years. Some great places to get out to around Canberra. Might be doing a club trip there next year into the mountains.

Forget the car you can cycle almost everywhere in canberra really easy just get some long leggings a good top and beanie and gloves. Its like any place it hits you hard the first time then ya get used to it.

It is 8 degrees here in melb at the moment but you get some of the nicest days in winter.

Hospital parking is a shocker maybe the boy can drop you off on his way through as it is one of those places that everything is 15 minutes away

You will have to get some show chains and go for a drive up the mountains.

        You will be fine
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

Minus 1 there overnight - at least now you will get to use the idle-up switch if you have diesel!

Seriously though, I lived there for a couple of years and there were plenty of tracks and hills to play around and camp out. And the beaches weren't that far away. Saw my first and only real platypus in the wild too. Stayed away from the snow though it was too expensive to go there.

Re: Moving from Brisbane to Canberra

              Esie,

I lived in Canberra for over 8 years, left about 4 years ago and moved about the place for work. I know I will end up back there and am happy with that. It is a fantastic place. Clean, Pretty, close to lots of places etc. But it is expensive to live in terms of renting because it is transient with the Public Service, Defense etc. Its also expensive to buy because it is a protected market. My wife worked at the Canberra Hospital and loved the place.

The warmest time I spent in Canberra winters was whilst riding a motorbike. You were dressed for the cold, and helmets keep your ears warm. Just have to watch out for black ice on winters mornings. That stuff is not forgiving on a motorbike.

It was funny moving from Perth to Canberra in the late 90's. From 3 days to anywhere to 3 hours from Sydney, 6 to Melbourne, 1.5 to the beach, 1.5 to the snow. It was quiet a shock.

There are some great trails through the Brindabella's, Barry Drive from Jindabyne to North East Victorian coast through the Snowy's to where the Snowy River meets the sea at Lakes Entrance. Lovey places on the NSW South Coast. Unfortunately the thinking of the time by the local ACT politicians while I was there was that we have to keep all the bush in pristine condition for future generations - so they cant see it as well. Fires seem to get through pretty well though.

I could not tell you current rental prices at the moment - but could find out.

If you want to chat about where to live let me know - I will pass on my mobile number. There is a division between north and south of Lake Burley Griffen. ( I just read this again - the division being the lake! What I meant was - One of the 1st questions you get asked in Canberra is 'What side of the lake are you? Once a Northerner, always a Northerner etc.)

              Regards

              Bevan

Other than the lake, cause that has bridges and a dam.

I want to give some instruction before you move
                          1) Arrange for your valuable documents, jewelery, money etc. to be moved separately. These should not be included with household goods when moving.
                          2) Arrange for an electrician to disconnect any special light fittings you want to take with you.
                          3) Wash and dry all dirty clothes.
