    Hey guys,

Just wanting some advice on what a good rugged powerful torch is?
I've got a small Lensor one (2xAA batteries) which is powerful for what it is, but looking for something bigger.

Had a look at the 4xD Maglites with LED for just under $100. Anyone used and recommend these?

Otherwise, what sort of options are there under $150?

    Thanks

Hey XLR, when you say Lenser are you refering to LED Lenser? They have a really good reputation and a wide range of torches available in their high performance range.

There is a guy on the site that sells these through the vendors section:

One of the best torches I have ever owned (and still use) its a
Wolfeyes Defender, its a lightweight Superbright LED torch that out performs anything I have ever seen before. It will make most mag lights look like a candle in comparison. It pumps out 170 Lumens standard and there is a 260 lumen version incase 170 lumens doesnt make it bright enough!!!

Here's a pic of the beam. Note - shed is 15m away, back fence is 20m...

        Re: Torch advice

I have a 4D maglight that I bought years ago. It sits in the Prado and is rarely used as a torch, makes a good weapon though. I also have a series of LED lenser torches that get used every week. We have an H7, P7 and two P14s. Something to do with lots of hikes and camps and night time mountain biking (you don't realise quite how many spiders you run into on a night ride in the bush until you have a decent head torch!). I did a fair amount of research when I bought the LED lensers and for less than $150 the P14 takes some beating.

          Thanks.

Schaffer - yeh talking about the LED Lensor. Good site there, problem is, I'm looking for something with a bit more "guts" than the P14, but not spending $500+ on the X21.

Ryzz - where'd you buy the Defender from? Can't see anything on ebay as a starting point.

mjrandom - Is there any real difference between the P7 and P14? Lumens are about the same yet the P14 is a fair bit more expensive?

And also, has anyone used or seen a Fenix TK40? 630 lumens for just over $150, watched one youtube review which rated it quite well

The P14 is quite a bit more powerful and running 4 AAs lasts longer too. Best bet is to find a retailer and go and play. I managed to get the P7 for about $80 and the P14s for less than $100 so shop around.

If you are after an impressive head light these are amazing

I was bragging about my maglite with a 3 watt LED conversion that I casually put away when a mountain biking friend walked out with these possum blinders on his head.

                Not too cheap though.

                  I love my Ay-Ups...

Ay-Up's are the best as a biking/head torch/helmet mount style light but are a pain to use as a normal torch (given the battery is seperate from the lights).

If they released a handheld with the same technology it would be great.

                  My 2 cents...

I just had a squizz at that Ay-Ups web site and looked at the base model V Twin Sports. $297 for a head lamp is a little steep no matter how bright the thing is. Hope it has a built in beer chiller as well for that price. The funny thing is they are based in Queensland and it's cheaper to buy it OS

                        Re: Torch advice

I will try to set up the various torches tonight and take some photos and post them here so you can at least see the difference between the LED lensers and the standard maglight.

I have tried the mega mountain bike lights and it is like going from high beam to parkers when you come around corners etc. The H7 gives me enough light without affecting the eyes too much. Mind you on coming cars still get agitated by that amount of light at head height.

I haven't needed to use the maglight in anger but I reckon it is as good as most coshes.

(Cosh, noun; A piece of metal covered by leather with a flexible handle; used for hitting people; usually on the head)

Don't you love the internet? Great for defining those tricky words...

Gee I am way behind the eight ball I allways thought that driving a 6 volt battery under Filppers tail was the best form of portable lighting but obviously I havent moved on with new technoligy ops:

                            Hi

I have a LED Lenser P14 and its fantastic. Maybe a bit big, so next time a P7, but I think next time will be a long time coming. This thing is very well built. Short of loosing it, or it being stolen I think it will out last me.

The only thing I that I have a thing about is battery size. Whatever I get has to run on readily available size batteries, like AA.

                              Re: Torch advice

Left to right 4D maglight, P7 and P14. Trees were 62m from the torches/camera. Maglight is just a standard halogen bulb but I have heard the LED bulbs aren't very good as the reflector is designed for a standard type bulb. The Maglight is actually shining on a black wattle that is about 10m closer to the torches. Both LED lensers were on minimum angle. The H7 head torch is a little less powerful than the P7. Maglight had new duracel Ds the other two with whatever was in them so not new but ok.

manual focus, manual exposure, 28mm, f3.6, ISO 100 (eq), 28 sec (I counted to 25) and yes I couldn't be stuffed changing settings.
