Re: Anyone got an Apple iPad

I've got to agree with Willykj. They're great. I've had a 64GB one for six months and took it overseas recently. Something weighing just under 1kg is certainly better in the carry on luggage than the laptop weighing in at 3kg. When we're travelling it's used for email and Internet searching mainly. I just went to places with free WiFi and used their networks - burger restaurants, bars, sitting in parks outside hotels, free WiFi hotspots in some towns, etc. I found I could start up, log onto a network, download email and shut down again in about the same time it took one of my mates to get his laptop on and running. I bought the little plug in adaptor so we could download photos and we found we used the iPad to store thousands of them. The sound quality (using headphones or plugged into a stereo) with iTunes is great too. I even managed to read a couple of novels I downloaded.
There are a few downsides - no USB port, can't run Flash, no camera so you can't do free Skype video calls, and we found sometimes large video attachments to emails were hard to download. But these issues are minor in comparison with how useful it is as a fun work tool. Recently I put a SIM card in it when we were up the coast for a few days and reception through the Telstra network was excellent.
There are so many good Aps it's hard to keep track of them, but a free one called Talking Tomcat is a big hit with little kids.

Re: Anyone got an Apple iPad

Big Fella and I both have the baby of the iPad's - 16gb wifi and love them. They are just a handy gadget I suppose, like a lot have said previously, on the plane it's great as hand luggage with all the entertainment you'll need so you don't need to worry if the in flight entertainment doesn't work or is below average. Works really well as an e-reader too , although it does get heavy after a while, but that would be my only complaint. And it's so much easier carrying the iPad around rather than the laptop!! We've got the adaptor for the SD card and the photos aren't too bad.

Lacey, the 16gb, what sort of storage capacity has it got in layman terms, ie you 1000 photo's and 4.movies etc. It is easy to talk in GB but what does that equate to in real life.

Re: Anyone got an Apple iPad

              Hey Hutch,

According to Big Fella's research, 9gb is about 2500 high res photos (10 megapixels), or 2300 songs is 11gb.
I got this from a forum - "I have a 16 Gb iPad with ~200 songs, ~100 pdf files, tons of apps, and ~1000 photos, and it's barely 1/2 full"

I'm not very technical, but I hope that helps you a little

Just got the word from work that as of the end of last year we have completed the 3rd consecutive year of no LTIs and the award will be an Apple iPad - 16GB non-3G.
Should keep me and the kids amused for a while...

Might have to see if i can take it into the local apple shop, and trade it up a level or two... ?

Good one Matt, they are very addictive.has a lot of god stuff and is very easy to use.Unlike a note pad they are much easier to take with you.ALso you can use it with the aftermarket audio system.Other with Blootooth or plug it into the iPod connection to play you,re music.

if you don't have any luck but want to make use of 3g then check out these things

                              http://www.telstra.com.au/shop/Consumer ... DENTITY=NO

$129 from any post office. activate, buy the prepaid data as you need it and you' (plus up to 4 other near you if you want to share) are online via wifi. - there are plenty of these things out there from different vendors but as much as we hate them, telstra just have the best coverage.

i have a 32gb 3g/wifi unit for about 4 months now, earlier last week i got a 16gb 3g unit from work as a company unit. the 32gb one has become property of swmbo and i fire up this telstra thing when i want to not hammer the work data plan (or want better coverage as work use optus), it is pretty handy.

i have done a bit of a review of the app list. on my ipad i've had for a few months the list is long. i've downloaded quite a few but on the new company one i've only re-downloaded the "good" ones... for now anyway, no doubt it will fill up with it's own crap before long...

here's a list of the ones that i would download again if i had to wipe the machine

Oz Radar HD - links into the BOM radar maps. yes you can do it for free via the browser but this overlays your GPS position and lets you choose the "nearest" one. good for when you're not in your normal neighbourhood.
Stash Pro - lets you password protect access to certain files.
Foxtel Guide - if you have foxtel IQ2 you can log into the tv guide, look for tv shows and set your iq2 to record them. excellent if you're at work or away from home and see a show you want to watch, can remote record it.
CBA Property Guide - ties in GPS location with realestate data to work out how much that house you're parked next to just sold for.
TuneIn Radio - heavy on the data usage but streaming of thousands and thousands of world wide radio stations.
Find My Iphone - this is free once you upgrade to 4.2, previously part of the Mobile Me package, lets you track down the GPS location of any of your devices on a map, display a message and remote lock them and worst case, wipe all your data off them.
Bloomberg - good app for tracking stocks/indicies
Flipboard - excellent rss/twitter/facebook/flickr reader, turns all those feeds into a magazine style flip book.
Facepad - good facebook app given facebook don't have a native ipad app, only iphone.
Quota - can link it in to all sorts of stuff like how much data you're using, how much credit you have left, what your frequent flyer points are up to, what your credit card balance is, and even the main roads traffic camera's
Skype - free calls... without the video
ABC tv and ABC View - news, documentaries, streaming of ABC News 24 and some random tv shows.
Zinio - online magazine subscription service. every now and then they have cracker deals too, i signed up to a 12 months subscription of a magazine for $12.95 that would cost me at least $8 per mag in the shops. if you can handle on-screen reading it's pretty cool.
VLC - lets you drag and drop "normal" video formats so you can watch your AVI/WMV movie library without having to convert them all to MP4 to play via itunes.
WorldMate - if you travel a lot this is awesome, i have it on the blackberry and it will read any emails that i thinks are flight or hotel confirmations and turn them into a trip, create diary appointments for the flights and tell me about the weather where i'm heading the day before i go. if you pay for the pro version you get realtime flight delay and gate information too.
NoteShelf - if you want to hand write notes this is very cool. has replaced standard paper and pen for me.
DocsToGo - for opening and editing anything microsoft office related.
GoodReader - for opening just about any file format include pdf.
RoboForm - password keeper, syncs with my pc via roboform online.
MudMap - GPS mapping software that downloads the maps so you can view where you are when you don't have a data connection

some novelty ones that consume a bit of my time of late are
Flight Tycoon( - Freebie) manage an airport by building runways, buying planes, setting up airline routes etc. massive time waster but good fun
Words With Friends - wins the award for the crappest name.... but is basically scrabble. play online against others that have the same game. is pretty sad to play a game of scrabble via ipad and iphone to the wife on the same couch when we have the boardgame in the cupboard but i won't go there....
PlaneFinder - links into ADSB radar and tells you all about the planes that are up the sky world wide, where they came from, where they're going, what type, how high etc etc etc.
ShipFinder - links into whatever radar they use and tells you all about the ships in the sea world wide, where they came from, where they're going, what type, what name etc etc.

and plenty of other ones including heaps of kids games. toy story 1 is free, 2 and 3 you pay for, hours of entertainment for the kids along with card, counting and memory games.

                                i'm sure there's many that i haven't found yet!
