  • Awning for a 120 series (03) model

    Hi everyone,

Hope this is the right category for this post: Can anyone recommend a good awning to attach to our Prado - its a grande so has the roof rails and the factory cross bars. Would like to get one of those roll-out awnings off the side of the car in case it rains when we're camping.

    Cheers

    Dave

I have a 2003 Grande and we went with the ARB awning. Could not be happier with it. Everything works well and it takes about 2 mins to set up or tear down, even for windy wetaher. We have been in many windy locs and it worked well provided you put out the ropes and pegs it comes with. I would rate it as one of the best accssories we have purchased. Not dear from memory around $330.

x3 and we have recently adding the 1250mm rear awning. Just need to get a square of canvas made up to join them now.

The Rhino Fox Wing does all of that altough it appears to be a little flimsy but maybe someone with one can comment. Rather than a square just get a triangular piece made up so you don't need any poles to support it. Then you need to find some means of attaching this to your existing awnings.

I believe Leachy has the fox wing so he may be able to say something here. It was released just after we bought our side awning and we did have a look at it, at one of the shows. Like anything I felt it had good points and bad points.

One awning to cover all was nice, but I didn't like the angles as we plan to hook our tents up to ours. As for attaching the square I get made for ours, we will use velco much like the awnings already do and get one upright pole and two cross member poles.

              Cheers Neil

Re: Awning for a 120 series (03) model

There are a few choices, but essentially they are the same design as the ARB. You can go to other branded stores (eg TJM) and check them out. Almost all of them run 2.5m against the car and extend 2m out from the car. We chose the Ironman because it is the opposite - runs 2m against the car and extends out 2.5m. Personal choice, but that's what we preferred - I don't like the rolled up bag sticking out in front of the roof line. We also felt it gave us more space underneath, but like anything, it comes with a cost. If you are using it for rain protection, the front door isn't covered if you need to get in.

The foxwing is a great bit of gear and provides the best cover. It is a bit heavier, more expensive and takes a bit longer to set up with all the poles.

They will all break in strong winds unless pegged down very well.

I have a Foxwing and as far as covered area goes it is probably the best on the market. It's good to be able to have the rear door open in the rain and have it all stay dry. Though it is probably the most expensive option. The Foxwing is as well built as any other awning I have seen. The biggest downside of the Foxwing is that because of it's large area it requires more poles / pegs to secure.

I have 2 awnings on my 04 vehicle, but I do have a custom made roof rack too. Cannot recommend the ARB one highly enough. Simple roll out one but the drawback being that it needs guy rope and poles to stay up.
Have just purchased an Open Sky awning with a Fred's arm. Apparently they are being made to fit Rhino racks now and will be taken over by the Black Widow company. It is fabulous, it pivots to the back of the car and clicks in situ and had the advantage of self supporting legs, also with the option of guy ropes and pegs to secure it in position.

The Open Sky awning is fantastic for when I use the trek table. I had the awning fitted in Ballina and the rep there said that they can fit them to almost any configuration of roof racks.
Had so many people come over and have a squizz. Highly recommended.
You're here for a good time, not a long time... Love my Prado...
