It saddens me to say it, but I believe every word. There are people of the ethnic origins you speak about who dress smartly, speak well, and hold down professional jobs. It's just that many many of their brethren have purposeless lives, and live for alcohol. I wish i knew the solution. But I don't.

Before we get too judgemental, I'd just like to point out that there are plenty of white fellas who suffer from the same failings.

For me, the good thing about this thread (and the other one, wherever it went) is that bushbasher helped these people out regardless of his misgivings about their life choices. Plenty of people would drive right by. Good on you mate.

If I am reading between your lines then I have come to the conclusion that these people were, very possibly, I know I am clutching at straws here, of, (cue deep voice over guy) Aboriginal Descent.

Im right aren't I. And I would suggest that before political correctness changed things that they would have been referred to as "full blood" or "half caste" or similar.

If this is the case then it would be unusual for them to say 'thanks' in the way that other cultures would expect it.

So I dont think the lack of thanks would be a lack of thanks or appreciation for the kind act that you performed. And I would suggest that if that person was in a position to help you they wouldnt expect a thanks either. Its just a strange, to us, part of that culture.

I also wonder how we woud react if someone pointed out our mistake if we were to make one. I ran out of fuel once simply because I forgot to check out the guage. I did have a deliciously tasty treat in the seat next to me that may have taken my mind from other important things . I dont think I would have appreciated my white knight pointing that out to me, I would probably already be aware of it.

We stopped to help three locals stranded in the GCR a few years ago in a Ford Laser. They had no tools to jack up the vehicle to change tyres so we helped out. They were pretty grateful and while standing around they were telling us about all the sacred sites etc just up the road.

They had all the time in the world, and us Europeans had a time table to stick too, so we rushed off and had no time to contemplate what they had told us. Bit of a shame really when I think about it.

Ha, have to share this. 300km along the Port Hedland to Telfer pipeline we came across 1 fellow sitting on a pile of rocks. he had with him, 2 packets of winfield blues, 1 x esky full of ice and beer.
We stopped and asked him if he needed a lift or help, he asked for a lighter and said he was ok.
We passed the rocks on the way back later that day and he was not there????? Often wonder what or who

Good on you for helping. I was born and raised in Darwin and seen it ALL. Have been robbed, threatened etc but still have time to help a person in need (just more cautious these days). Nice work.

Different cultures make for interesting interactions...

Whilst Aboriginal culture may not say "thanks" nor expect a "thanks"...

Folks in the US will almost always reply to "thanks" with "you're welcome". If you don't reply in kind, it's seen as a minor social transgression.

Indians will shake their head side-to-side when they want to convey total agreement or understanding, when other cultures interpret it as "no".

Germans rap the table with their knuckles as a form of applause in meetings. But if they whistle at you, you're probably not very popular with them.

Many Asian cultures will indicate they understand what you said, when really they have no idea or don't agree with you at all.

Ultimately, many subtle non-verbal and some verbal signals need to be relearned when communicating across cultures. In cross-culture interactions, I remind myslef that generous tolerance is a worthwhile trait.

                              Just a thought...
