Thank's it's in the great sandy desert about 500k's inland from Port Headland had a look on google maps tonight and the Canning Stock Route runs thru the back of it. I am lead to believe it is one of the most remotest mine sites in WA but has a 800 man camp to cook for aswell. Really looking forward to the new challenge and crossing the border into WA and just to get on the road again.

      • Re: What do you do for a living?

I just arrived back from meetings in Japan and thought you guys might like to see this. Parent company has a couple of new power projects in Singapore and were rolling the steel shells for some steam drums. A mate of mine was the Team Leader. The steel is only a basic carbon steel with a little Chromium and Molybdenum. The 'slab' is about 3m wide and 6m long and 150mm thick. It was heated in a furnace for 24 hours to 900C. The slab is then picked up and the mill scale blasted off with water. The steel is then progressively rolled to its initial diameter of 1.9m. The steel is still over 450C when the rolling was completed. The whole time checks are made with templates to make sure the rolling radius is correct. We were 15m away and the heat was something else. After this process the 'tube' is allowed to air cool. It is then shot blasted and the ends are trimmed for final rolling. This is done at 650C and the entire shell including the ends goes through the roller. By the time the shell is comleted the thickness is reduced from the initial 150mm to around 127mm. The weld preparation is then machined for the seam weld. We use a narrow gap automatic TIG with wire feed. The weld is only 9mm wide despite being some 127mm deep by the time the rolling is finished. The shells are prepped and welded together (3 pieces) and then the ends are fitted. The ends are deep drawn from 150mm plate. The pressing is done at 900C with a press rated for 8,500 tonnes! I was lucky enough to see this done several years ago. Impressive gear. Once it is all welded various nozzles and fittings are welded on and the drum goes back into the furnace for post weld heat treatment before being tested and shipped to site. Appologies for the quality of the pictures, the little point and shoot camera my mate was using was very confused by the radiant energy coming from the furnace and steel, this is the best I could get out of Pshoppe.

The guys up close are all in 'moon suits'

The plate is actually sagging under its own weight while on the crane

That's unreal. I have seen them at home take the slabs of aluminium that are 8x2mtrs and about 400mm thick and watched them roll it out into aluminium foil. And I thought that was cool but that wins hands down.

Bloody amazing the variety of jobs that we Prado people are employed in. Thought i'd throw my "2 bobs worth" in to the mix. I manage the Quarantine operations for a number of seaports in the central Qld area that currently handle approx 1300 ships a years from 'round the world that will load 90M tonnes of coal. When i'm not playing with ships (& coal) I like to get the Prado dirty & spend time exploring the bush with the family.

Health and Safety Manager writing OHS management systems, doing risk assessments, incident investigation creating training programs and the like. Basically trying to prevent people from doing what the other 95% of the population would call stupid

But as we say in the business "there is no such thing as common sense" and "never underestimate the predictibility of stupidity"

Hi, I'm Graham, I work for Star Track Express as a semi-trailer driver for local sydney customers, but still do between 350 and 450 k's per day, can get pretty monotonous and frustrating out there in the traffic all day (12 to 14 hrs). Thats why the missus and I like to get away in the Prado and now the campertrailer, any chance we get. Our oldest child is 28 and the youngest is 20, so no rugrats to pull on the brakes on weekends.

So, fresh (well 5 years) out of school, I have a cushy Government job, working alongside the CEO of the Cairns Health Service District, kind of like an assistant, where I arrange meetings, write letters, you know, office stuff!
