A Sstrange But True Troopy Story or A Vacation Love Affair....

I know this is a Prado forum, but i'm looking for a little leeway here. I kinda think i'm a PP institution or just think of me as your American 120 cousin...FJ.

Last year on the way to the PP GTG '09 I arrived in Birdsville with LF&R, to meet with Callo, Gray Nomad, and Stan the Man!! When we arrived at Birdsville we stopped at the Birdsville pub for a look around. Outside the pub as a beautiful 1981 Toyota FJ45 LWB Troopy. She was extremely clean and rust gee. I took a pic of her along with all the other COo.oOL off-roaders around Birdsville.

    Late June 2009

We crossed the Simmo and made it to the PP GTG '09.

Last July when on The Tip Trip Cape York 2010 W/ MAXTRAX & Dirty Weekends we ere on our way back Brad and I were discussing all the old troopy's on The Cape and how I would like to have one 'up above' and comparing colors and features. He said I should go up and start a conversation and slip in that I'm looking for an old troopy to bring back to the US. We arrived at the Musgrave Road House for gas and a lot burger when I spotted this old FJ45 Troopy. I went to the vehicle and talked to the owners wife. She told me that they bought it for two trips, the Simmo and The Tip, then was looking at selling it. I gave him her by business cart and Brad gave him one as well.

When I came back I was going through my pics to post on fb and noticed it had the white steely wheels. I looked at last years Simpson crossing pics and the license plates were the same. I thought it was more than a coincidence and knew I needed to get her.

About 2 weeks ago Brad sent me a text message with a pic of her in Brizzy and that he left her another card. He sent me an e-mail the other night with pics of her and said he bought her.

She is a clean troopy with only 220,XXX km and no rust. Everything is original and the only things needing attention are the windshield (broken in the Simmo pics as well), and the drivers seat needed new skins. She's a petrol, but thats OK for my purposes. Anyway's you cant always pick who you fall in love with.

She's not a Prado, but i'm getting closer...at least the steering wheel i on the right side.

I will let you know more when she will be shipped up here and what i'm going to do with her.

    Cheers,

Its OK Ben .... like most northern cousins you may smell kinda funny and spend too much time in prisons .... but we like you that way

What a brilliant score. That's one fantastic looking Troopy.

Are you allowed to run RHD vehicles in the States? Just wondering if you were going to have to convert it. We have some weird rules depending on the vehicle age. A mate is going through the conversion process on a Chrysler New Yorker; yes he can be a bit odd! Japan though don't mind and there are plenty of LHD vehicles running around - it's like a badge of exclusivity there!

No worries on the RHD. I just have to put a sign on the windscreen to remind me to "Drive on the right!" jk

The RHD is Fine if the vehicle is over 25 years old. There is really no conversion companies due to the rarity of RHD vehicles. Almost every vehicle made is a available in LHD.

Looks like a fantastic drive Ben. Like many here who must've had exposure to the 40 series vehicles, my dad & I had a shorty petrol when I was younger - unstoppable, loved it and still kinda wish I had one, even with the hard pull to left with any dab of the brakes and a massive fuel bill. Wouldn't suit my family too well at the moment though.

Looking forward to some great trip reports, and possibly a bit of a build up??

I will let you know, but i'm looking at things now. I have 2 choices...

                1) Leave her stock as possible. There are only 2 things that need to be fixed, the windscreen and the drivers seat has some small issues. The seats are easy. When it comes into Los Angeles I can take it to Tijuana, Mexico for a set of custom leather seats.

                2) I bling her out... ARB 3" lift, ATX Mojave wheels, ARB bull bar, BajaRack, with an ARB RTT.

                Whadyathink?
