  • Tents- Oztent, turbo tents, jet tents

    Hi all,

What, if any, are opinions on the above few tents? We thought we liked the turbo tent, but are now leaning towards a Oztent RV3 (maybe 4).

Thoughts? I like the awning on the oztents, but turbos look to be maybe more sturdy in full on 'wild' weather.

    Cheers

Tents- Oztent, turbo tents, jet tents

We have the Black Wolf Turbo 240 (not the lite version) and it's fantastic. Easy to put up and it has better headroom than the Oztent. I also like having a second layer of canvas over my head as the Turbo does with the canvas fly.

    Cheers, Sam.

Re: Tents- Oztent, turbo tents, jet tents

I have the BW 270 plus lite..
I checked out the Oztents, and although I was a fan of them, there was no way to get in the Prado due to the length unless I had the windows down

It takes me about 7 minutes to put up (including an additional ground cover - oztrail ultra mesh) and that includes the BW outer cover.
It takes me around 10-12 mins to take down and put back in the bag. The trick here for new players is to watch the videos on their website HERE.

I waited until anaconda had a 20% sale and then approached BCF.. BCF exclusively sell the 270 version so got it for the price of the 240 Plus that anaconda were selling for.
I highly rate it just due to the fact I can erect it and still have enough time to sit and crack a beer open before the missus returns with some firewood for dinner

Re: Tents- Oztent, turbo tents, jet tents

We went for a Black Wolf because of the extra head room.
We found that a couple of minutes difference in tent setup/packup doesn't mean much because it is all the other stuff - bedding, clothes, kitchen etc. that takes the majority of the time.

Love our Oztent RV3. We use it as an annexe to the Jayco when the kids bring extra friends away, or when we do overnight trips away from the base camp.

Ok, so it sounds like the Turbo is popular for head room, but Oztent handy with other items.

Anyone had any serious storms in either?? No issues? I doubt it with Turbos, they look very sturdy, what about oztents?

Switched - I like your thinking. However is the cost of the tent worth it. What sort of price are these tents?

A lot of people down this end buy tents from Southern Cross Canvas http://www.southerncrosscanvas.com.au/t ... ate-tents/.
Their quality is good for about 20+ years, though their prices gone up quite a bit lately...

Re: Tents- Oztent, turbo tents, jet tents

priced a blackwolf turbo 270 today at BCF $899, i think that can wait a while, but what i can say is i stayed in one at the gtg, and the set up was very quick and easy, packing up can be a bit different but that will come with exerience, was a very sturdy tent and while we didnt have a deluge of rain we had about 2 inchs in the last day/night i was there and it stayed bone dry. from memory the oz tent when packed down is reasonably flat but it is about 2.2m long, correct me if im wrong, not real good for a prado with a cargo barrier, roofrack material there, blackwolf packs down to a bag about 1m long. turbo 270 will be my choice of tent when i get one in the future. cheers samo

We have been on a couple of long trips where people had Oztents. They are not a 30 second tent, despite what their ads say. I reckon that if you put up with tarp on ground, awning and all stay ropes, the average time spent was about 20 minutes. On the first trip, the couple got so sick of it they slept in the troopie for the rest of the trip. I would not touch with a barge pole.

We have a Black Wolf Turbo Lite 300 Plus. Bloody big bag at about 1300mm long by about 400 high. It does fit in the rear of the vehicle but then nothing else will so up on the roof with it. It is large enough to hold probably about 7 people with bags but dosn't have much in the way of shelter out the front if the weather turns mean. The Deluxe Fly and other add on shelters will not suit the Plus style Balc Wolf range.
Turbo Series (220g Ripstop poly/cotton canvas) | Turbo Lite Series (150D Ripstop Polyester)

The OzTent Jet Tent which is a rip off of the Turbo but has some really nice features such as a much longer annex door which is about twice as long as the Turbo so it can give more protection plus you can zip/velcro attachments onto this to give shelter (You can see that if you compare the above and below images). A little bit pricy (300 plus equivalent is %1599 instead of the Trubo Tent being around $900 from memory) and not original though. Looks like it is only available in Poly Cotton Canvas so comparable to the Turbo Series (not Lite)
                      Jet Tent

Looks like it is made for the Prado

A friend has an OzTent RV4 (I think) and it is very very quick to put up and down, once it is taken off the roof and out of the bag. It literally is 30 seconds and it is free standing but still needs pegs. When packed up you have no choice but the roof option as they are long but they have a pretty low profile. My mate is considering what sort of roof tray options he has to suit his 100. The Rhino Alloy tray wont suit nor will an ARB Deluxe tray so might have to go a Tradesman style of a narrow tray alongside. The OzTent connects direct to the FoxWing and the JetTent if you want and xip together.

We run two Oz tent RV5 and couldn't be happier. Gives us great flexibility depending on how many kids are camping. We have the flys awing conectors walls etc, you can put a quick tent up or go all the trimings for more under cover area. Had them in very heavy rain and been bone dry inside. Yet to experience really strong winds, but have had a few strong gusts every so often.

We have the Oztent RV4 and love it. Yes it is long, so its fine up on the roofrack. I dont have the room in the cab for a turbo tent. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference. THey are both nice tents.

Have to say if your friends are tyaking 20minutes to put up an Oztent....... something is terrible wrong :? .
We rarley use the guys, and including the awning, if it took me more than a couple of minutes I would be amazed. They are a great touring tent.
I have no problem throwing it on the roof racks and it just needs 2 occy straps and you are ready to go.

I am an Oz Tent fan all the way.

We have a Oz Tent 4 but you need a roof rack to carry. Now with 2 kids it does not have enough room though and we upgraded to a CT.

We have spent 3-4 weeks at a time travelling in the Oztent moving most days, and never had an argument putting it up or putting it down.

The jet tent looks great for more room but pricy.
