well seeing we all like a bit of a flash feed while we are away i thought i would ask what sort of bbq does everyone take away with them on a trip, well i have a beefeater sports grill, its a cracker of a bbq and packs down nicely to a bag for transport, plates can be taken out and a frame can be dropped in so it can handle saucepans just like a gas stove. It copped a flogging over christmas last year and at the 2010 GTG, i have cooked everything from bacon and eggs to a baked dinner with leg of lamb. cheers samo

we have a coleman road trip grill. Picked it up around 4 1/2 years ago as a clearance (it is the old single burner model) works great. Takes up a bit of space but cooks up a storm for a family of six.

I have had a few over the years but the Weber Baby Q I have now is by far the best. Bit of a pain in the arse to lug around cos it doesnt really get any smaller and I normally throw a bit of Gaffa Tape over the lid to stop it rattling on corrugations. However you could cook dinner with thing in the middle of a Cyclone! It really is very good in windy conditions which is what we tend to end up in (lots of beach day trips).

        Chriso,
You are right on the money. We use our Baby Q for all roasts, chops, grilling, pizza's etc at home as well as on the road. The only thing makes the cooking task even easier is to invest in a remote meat thermometer. Dial up the temperature you want the meat to be (in the middle of the meat cut) by selecting the type of meat, Pork, Beef etc, then the way it is to cook rare, medium, well done. Stick the thermo couple into the centre of the meat, plug the wire end into the sender unit (which sends a wireless signal to the reciever unit), close the lid of the Baby Q, take the receiver unit to the chair, sit down open a beer and when the reciever unit beeps then the meat is all cooked - wonderful. For a small roast then you do the vegies as well. The best thing since sliced bread

Sounds to me the weber marketing team have targeted this forum?

But I have to agree they are good bbqs, bit pricey though when compared to other brands.

Mines sits permanently in the camper trailer. Disadvantage is that it needs fire, but we generally camp where we can have fires. Have just sat it on the gas stove in the camper, but takes a while to heat up. Home made 10mm plate 450 x 300 with fold in legs. Stores in a small melamine box. Cooks the best steak.

Our first option is a BBQ plate one of the ones that is half plate, half open grille. Plate has fold out legs, this is great for setting up over a fire ring.

If this is not an option or got back to the camp later than we should, the Baby Q is the next option. (no shares in Weber but wish we did!)

                    Re: portable bbqs

I've got something like JohnV and GDS. We have a Hilly Billy Camping fold out BBQ plate that is half plate and half slotted plate/grill. It's fantastic and use it as often as possible by it does require a fire. You could use this with a BBQ ring possibly but havn't attempted this.

Does the Weber Baby Q or the Beef Eater sports grill have a full plate? I am after something compact but don't need the open grill part, just want a full plate.

                        Davidsford,
The baby Q has a breakfast plate that you purchase (It is not full size but does the business). I think you are wrong to think the grill is of no use as it allows you to cook roasts, pizza's etc. It just adds so much scope to do other things. Baby Q Great little machine.

As simple as it is, this thing absolutely rocks: http://www.colemanaustralia.com.au/gear ... iddle.aspx

Slips on top of my two-burner Coleman gas stove, takes bugger all space and has great heat distribution. For a ripper breakky, just add a few egg-rings...
