    Here we go again,

Whenever there is a problem we need to make a law to address it.

Why not change attitudes, do a bit of education - like the videos above. Then the law won't be needed.

We Australians seem to have never lost the convict attitude. We only do the right thing if there is a penalty for misbehaviour. Hopefully one day we will grow up. (Ducks for cover)

Unfortunately we have allowed a generation and a half to grow up attached to their computers, Navmans, Ipads and Iphones and they would be totally lost without them. Laws won't stop them from doing what they consider to be normal for their generation. The idiot car manufacturers have also been building all these electronic gadgets and applications into vehicles just to appeal to the youinger set. Of course they're going to use the stuff whilst driving. Us older folk have just got to get smarter when out on the road and do our best to avoid being killed by one of these fools texting the person who is more than likely sitting in the seat right next to him. Good luck.

Because you can't fine someone unless there is a law in place...

Also if the government did make a video it would be exagerated and then it actually has the opposite effect.

As an example the current ads about wearing a seat belt (I always wear mine) shows a bloke in a car without a seatbelt who crashes. His head hits the windscreen, even though he needs to get past the airbag. And because he's not wearing a seatbelt his organs continue to travel forwards and are damaged????

The windscreen is possible I guess, i'm not sure, but the organs, this makes no sense to be what so ever. if you hit something and your not wearing a seatbelt, how do your organs move more than if you are. The factors that should affect that are the speed your traveling at and the instant of time over which you stop.

Any ads showing stopping distances annoy me too. I know from experience how quickly I can pull the prado up if I jump on the brakes, but any safety ad you see would suggest you need half a city block.

I believe it's because the body isn't a solid mass so the internal organs continue to move forward inside the body even though the body itself has stopped moving. Much like brain injuries due to a blow on the head. The head (skull) stops moving but the brain continues on and hits the skull.

I agree with that - so when the body is stopped (by seat belt or steering wheel/airbag) the organs keep going. So in my head the additional injuries would be from hitting the steering wheel, windscreen etc.

I guess what i'd rather see is a test dummy being smashed into a wall, with and without a seatbelt or a mythbusters style experiment on it.

Also the seatbelt ad that I've seen which I think had the most impact (think it was from overseas) was where the guy is sitting in a kitchen chair and as the crash happens his wife and daughter grab him around the waist and across the chest like a seat belt. It was quite full on.

I thought that one was quite good too - made you think. Better than the blood and guts type for impact.

I was amazed to hear the other day that only 1-2 % of people aren't wearing seat belts and yet they account for 28% of fatalities.

20 years ago I attended a two car head on collision on a major highways in SA, 5 people with seat belts in one car survived and 2 in other car with no seat belts, girl dead on the road and the driver impaled on the steering wheel but still alive.

Er... off topic, I know... ops: ops: ops:

But quite frankly, if everyone wore their seatbelt at all times, the average road toll would be reduced immediately. Having seen many crashes over my years, I cannot believe why anyone would not want to wear their seat belts at all times.

I don't wanna get shot down in flames but with a business to run, we definitely use our mobile phones while driving but they are paired to bluetooth handsfree devices (2x Jabra Wave 2s). The Jabra's are voice activated in that we touch the button on the earpiece and it tells our phone who we want to call so there is no need to touch our phones (mine's always in a cradle and DH's is in a pouch). They can be automatically set up to answer after so many rings but that's just downright annoying so, I only answer the calls I want to or need to. DH lets calls go through to voicemail if in traffic or unable to recognise the caller via ringtone. We never check text messages or emails while driving and don't have to worry about facebook because we don't have an account.

But honestly my two children are way more distracting at times than my phone. So is keeping an eye on the other idiots out there on the road who do the wrong thing from no indicators to pulling out infront of you to mass failure in executing an intersection.

Considering the young lady reading and sending text messages doing between 70 and 90 in the middle lane of the highway today, just asking for an incident to occur as she certainly wasn't paying much attention to anything but the phone

SKWR..that's seriously one of the most funniest (?) vids I've ever seen. If you can post it in the you tube thread, that would be awesome? Love it how they got a grissly bearded bloke and dubbed the lyrics...all of which run so true! I dunno they're some complete Muppet heads on the roads these days and I fear it's getting worse...these ads should be aired on p.time national t.v not all the betting crap that often appears..teach people a lesson, not how to loose your money down the toilet!
