Hi All,
I made my first trip into the Victorian Highlands on the recent labor day long weekend and I am smitten with the place!
I had been talking about it with some friends who wanted to take their 100 Series & Track Shak and 4 kids up into the hills to get away from it all. Although, having 4 kids makes that hard, even up there!
We left Melbourne after work and had to fight the traffic to get out of town. We met our mate on the wall of Thompson Dam just on sunset and had some low range night driving that took us accross a few creeks in the dark to get to camp. Its times like this that I love the roodtop! Being setup in 5mins is awsome when its dark!
Was a great weekend of Camping, fishing, 4WDing and enjoying good company.
We went for an explore from O'tooles Flat (our campsite) following the creek for about an hour, there was plenty to see, from old mines to ruins of old towns as well as scraping my towball a few times as we crossed deep rutts, fallen trees and some steep climbs. We then hit a main road and headed down the mountain until we got to Aberfeldy Bridge where we stopped by a shady spot to make some lunch and have a quick swim.
After lunch we decided to tackle a steep hillclimb just over the bridge that, of course, meant we had a steep decent. It would have been 35 degrees downwards, only broken by the erosion banks that allowed us to wash off some momentum, was the steepest climb/decent I have done, the adreneline was pumping and I was loving it!
It ended in the deepest water crossing of the day and another smaller climb until we hit the main sealed road to cross the dam and head back the way we had come the night before.
On Monday we stopped in Walhalla for lunch on the way home - what an awsome little town! We spent a few hours exploring the old shops and did the walk up the hill - we will be back to check this place out properly tho!
Here are some pics I took while out and about....

Getting over a tree on the track
