  • Proposed Trip from Birdsville to Halls Creek

We have a 120 series Grande and an Australian Off Road Camper Trailer which has taken us from Qld to Broome via Gibb River Road and up to the Cape without any problems .We are up to speed on all recovery and coms gear. Our trailer is around 1.4 T and carries 230 lts of water. Recently fitted dear diffs and a Steinbauer system.

Out next trip at the end of July is in it's planning stage and I would appreciate any comments on the route we are looking at as well as suggestions on better alternatives.

    Birdsville -Poeppel Cnr-French Line- Fink-Ayres Rock-Kings Canyon-MacDonnell Ranges-Alice-Tanami Track-Halls Creek.

I think we can manage Big Read OK, am not sure how rough Poepple and the French Line will be and if there are dunes along this part of the trip.

Despite what you read in all the articles and books, you do not cross "Big Red" to get from Birdsville to the Simpson Desert. The road crosses the sand dune well south of the location known as Big Red and is hardly a hill and it is a road, not a track. Big Red is where the old road used to cross the dune, probably 10 to 15 years ago I would say.

Thanks Michael, sounds good to me as I didn't want to drag the trailer over Big Red unless I had to. Do you have any experience with the rest of the routes on my trip, or know of a place where I can find the info?

      Regards,

      David.

Have a look at some articles I wrote on my web site about our 2003 and 2010 trip where we did some parts of the trip you are planning. See:

Kings Creek Station to Ellery Creek Big Hole http://www.michaelmcfadyenscuba.info...hp?page_id=781
Erlunda to Kings Creek Station http://www.michaelmcfadyenscuba.info...hp?page_id=781
Crossing the Simpson (via Rig Road) http://www.michaelmcfadyenscuba.info...hp?page_id=582

        Hope these help a bit.

          Hello Michael,

I am sure they will. I had a quick look at your dive photos as well, 3000+ dives sounds amazing. Amanda and I have only got 50 up and really enjoy it. When we hit Broome we are off to the Rowley Shoals for 5 days, we have done it before and a looking forward to a return visit. We use innon gear, arms, strobe and wide angle lens on our Olympus camera, I would like to say some of our shots are good but most of those are taken by Amanda.

          Regards
