Trip report (with photo's) from my Flinders, Lake Eyre, Simpson, Corner Country trip

    Overall we did just under 7000 Kms....averaged around 13 Litres per 100Km (including the Simmo Crossing)....BUT I did have a fair bit on top as this is quite a good deal higher than I usually get from the 3 litre Diesel.

    Personally, no damage at all...a lot of loose screws in the Black Widow Drawers (tightened along the way) but luckily no damage to tyres, engine, suspension or anything else for that matter.

    I read an awful lot on PP over the last 12 months about suspension and lift, and I did go to aftermarket Bilstein's, with King Springs and added Poly Air Bags as well.....AND the 50 Ml lift. NOW this did work a treat, and the run over the desert was very easy for the Prado BUT (and this is a big BUT).....we went over with 5 other 4WD's, and a bog standard 120 (overloaded and sitting pretty low) was one of those......he got bogged twice but I put that down more to inexperience than anything else, it was this guys first ever fourby trip but he did a great job and the 120 DID make it over, and the owners had a ball and learnt an awful lot along the way.

    SO...don't let having to kit your rig out with thousands of dollars of extras turn you off.....as long as you are going with a group, and there's a capable vehicle or two....you'll be fine....the stories I was told about the Oodnadatta Track and the Simpson "destroying standard suspension" may be right BUT it didn't affect us. Oh sure the 120 dragged it's arse all the time, but he still got over and did everything we did apart from making it up Big Red.

    A few things for planning...do LOTS of research (we did and it paid off).....we had 6 couples go and each couple did the reserach on a section, and led the group through that section, gave us radio commentary, told us to stop at certain spots and we knew exactly where and how much camping spots (bush and caravan parks) were.....so we were very well prepared.

    Fuel was cheaper than I thought (but still dear by Brisbane standards).....we paid (on average) $1.69.....the lowest the morning I left at $1.38...the highest at William Creek ...$2.20.

    We took most of our food.....past Leigh Creek there isn't much other than real basics...and it gets dearer and dearer, so a good Fridge is essential....I have the Waeco Cool Freeze and we used it as a Freezer and Fridge...worked a charm!!

    We were incredibly lucky, we went expecting NOT to be able to do the Simmo crossing....Eyre Creek had been closed all year.....we arived at Dalhousie to find it had been opened 2 days earlier, it was time for celebration!!

    But all in all an incredible trip....for me Cape York (probably alone) will be next....and then in a few years some of this same crew may undertake a Kimberley Trip.....can't wait for both!!

      Thanks for the trip report - I was following your planning thread closely and it's great to see you got to realise it.

      We're heading out next year to the Strz and BV tracks with some time in the Flinders in between, and these trip reports both help with the planning and whet the appetite.

          No worries Trev....The Strez and Birdsville Tracks were all in excellent condition (this year anyway).....we were cruising along at about 95KPH on both....The Oodnadatta track above Marree was rough....mainly corrugations (and plenty of them)....but I can't imagine you'll have too many drama's on the first two.

          If doing the Strez go the extra and do Cooper Creek, it's fantastic and with the water that's there I'd reckon the birdlife will be there for a fair while.

          Absolutly no drama's at all in the road all the way to Innamincka and it's only another 14 K's to the Dig Tree site.....there's pit toilets there (no showers)...and it costs $11 per vehicle to camp (for as long as you like)...and the old guy who comes around each night and takes you in his truck to collect wood is worth the trip alone......he's about 85, still flies his own Cessna 172, and been there working for Cordillo Downs (and the Kidmans) forever!!......boy does he have some stories to tell and for a coldie (after the wood) he'll talk until dark!

          The original trip thread helped heaps and it's good to see that the photo's and other information will help someone else...cheers mate, get out there and do it.....you will not regret it one bit!

                      Good report and photos. The section of Cooper Creek that you are talking about, if it is the Dig Tree or the waterholes to the west and east of Innamincka, then they always have that much water, no matter the drought.

                        Looks awesome up there! Oh well, there'll be no excuses for not being 100% ready to go next year!

                          We camped right beside the Dig Tree, my understanding (from the old guy that we talked to that is the caretaker) is that in times of drought there are some water holes BUT the river does not run....as you can see from my photo's it's bloody wide and fairly deep at present.

                            Ben, I have photos of some of the vehicles crossing, just waiting for another guy to send me a CD with one of my Prado going over.....to be honest where we went over it was no more than just about wheel height, apart from a dip right in the middle where the water came up to the bonnet just for a second...we walked it before crossing and reckoned it wouldn't be a problem..........to be honest the QPWS were being over cautious in keeping it closed for so long (Eyre Creek), in my opinion 99.9% of 4WD's would have got over even if it was much higher......I suppose they do this to ensure the dickheads who take a Territory and a Subaru Forrester (yep we saw them bogged on Lake Poepell...ignoring the detour and going for the fast route....being winched out by a guy in a Landcruiser.....we radioed to see if they needed help but they were right)...but it's people like them I imagine the QPWS was taking no risks with in keeping Eyre Crek closed for so long. Whilst I am yet to do Cape York (will do that in 2012) I recon most of the crossings on the OTT would be far worse than Eyre Creek...although my understanding from the Birdsville copper (who we met on top of Big Red), the Creek was a lot higher in the weeks before we went through.

                            Anyway this is my mates 100 Series going across (his is lifted)



                            And the Mitzy Triton work ute (the only petrol vehicle we had)



                            I don't have a photo of the 120 going through, but with all the weight he had on, and given it was bog standard he was a good 4-6 inches lower than my 150 (which was also held up in the back by Poly Air Bags) the water would have been quite a bit higher for him...even so I don't beleive he had water in the cabin and made it across safely...as I say I think the QPWS were just being cautious.

                              Mark, what a fabulous report. We went to the Dig Tree in September last year and from your pix, the water level is even higher. There were still some islands in the water with trees growing on them. We had wet weather when we went there and skidded and slid all the way in and out just to get there BUT as you said, "You just got to get out there." It is fabulous. I wish we had the chance to do Camerons Corner and the Cordillo Downs track to Birdsville but it was all too wet then. That just means we will have to go back again.
