  • MUMSRIG's little drive over East and back...

I'm sitting down watching the V8 Supercars racing on TV and thought I better stick something up about our trip... So here goes...

    DAY1

We left Perth the morning I finished my last night shift after I had a bit of a sleep and headed to Kal for the first stop... Spent the night building the treck table at Darryl's shed and then had tea with the inlaws and spent our first night on the road in a house

    DAY 2

Headed off from Kal and caught up with the FIL in Higginsville to say goodbye.

The next stop was Balladonia for a feed and a rest. Had a walk through their little museum to.

Then we went on to Madura Pass and spent the night at the lookout. Top little spot and an amazing view. It's quite an unexpected view considering you have just driven across the Nullabor and it's flat as a tack!

Day 3 consisted of a stop at the Bight to see if there were any whales... This place didn't exist the last time I went across... Magic spot to view the whales!! Very proffesional set up to. Only iPhone pics for the moment. The whales are still on the camera...

Caiguna was my first chance to get some real choc milk and iced coffee to... WA stuff is crap in comparison!

We stayed at the Big4 in Ceduna for the night.. This was their only grassed camper bay... It's only a very small park.

        Day 4

From Ceduna we were aiming to reach Roxby Downs by the end of the day. My mate in Roxby told us about a so called "Short Cut" from Wirrulla through to Glendambo which ended up taking us along the Stock Route 15 trail. Beautifull country side and exactly the type of terrain we were hoping to see. Didn't want to be travelling along highways all the time..

Someone went to great pains to create a damn out here a long time ago..

These timber and corrugated iron structures were everywhere... Obviously used for cattle droving back in the day. This one was called Skull Camp Tanks.

We almost had an incident on the track. We had just passed over a dead emu and were talking about it when a live one decided to run out onto the track, it glanced off the XROX bar and kept motoring along in front of us for a bit... We captured the video on the little DVR camera mounted in the front screen.

There were a few homesteads along the track and more cattle grids then I have ever encountered in my life... We passed only one vehicle heading the opposite direction on this track...

The first sign of real civilisation along here was a place called Kingoonya... It was almost like it had been forgotten in time...

What a ripper of a place. It's right on the Trans Line and must have been a bustling town at some point. It even has a cricket pitch in the middle of the main street! Old cars and trucks looked like they had just been parked and left in the streets!

The pub was the only thing still operational in the town. Buildings were falling down all around the place.. The caravan park was an absolute corker!!

I could have spent hours looking around this place...

But alas... we were trying to get to Roxby before night fall. We made it to my mates place as the sun was begining to set.

                Day 5 and 6

were spent in Roxby playing catch up. We hadn't seen our friends for 7 years... The kids are all similar ages and were having a blast as well.

Whilst in Roxby, we went for a drive out to Andamooka and had lunch at one of the pubs... What a place Andamooka is!!

I could have spent a week here just going through all the paddocks looking at machinery and cars.. Stuff the opals hahahaha

There were some real dives out there but there were also some real nice houses... Some places are in between the mounds of dirt left from mining on either side...

We left Roxby early on Day 7 and our first stop was Peterborough. I remember staying here as a kid and climbing all over a Steam Train which was next to the caravan park. We decided to take a look at the Railway Museum now that the old rail yards have been converted..

Well worth a look if you like trains and history.. The loco that I remember climbing on is now in the main shed and is restored which was nice to see.. You will need atleast an hour to check it out properly.

2nd stop for the day was Lake Boga to have a squiz at the Catalina or Flying Boat. Sensational display.....

Our destination to end the day was Robinvale caravan park which is right on the border...

                      DAY 8

was on to Echuca to take a look at the Paddle Steamers... We went for a ride on the Pride of the Murray.

and then onto our main destination of Porepunkah where we met up with my parents who had travelled down from Newcastle. The caravan park was really nice and we were right on the river's edge. Porepunkah is only 5 minutes from Bright to.

                      DAY 9

saw us head into Bright to hire chains and toboggans for the kids and then we went and checked out Mount Hotham. 1st impressions were that it was very touristy and expensive.. Impressions were correct! $39 to park for the day!

There wasn't a huge amount of snow around at Hotham... it was the end of season after all...

But we still had some fun on the toboggans.

Dad throwing a snowball... This is all Hayden wanted to do on the whole trip!

We also went and checked out Omeo on the other side of the mountain.

This is their local swimming pool... They drop the gate and let it fill up.

                          DAY 10

On day 10 we took a drive up to Mount Buffalo and did a few walks and checked out all of the water falls. Magnificent place and steeped in history..
