  • Woodgate Beach 7 January 2012

    Thread 2

Going to Woodgate for a week from the 7th of January 2012 will obviously do full trip report am hoping for some ideas for the areas as we have never been there before........again over to the pradojedi!

If you are looking for 4wding there isn't a whole lot close to Woodgate. You can run through Kinkuna NP which has some rough and soft sections or run down the beach from Woodgate to Burrum Pt NP and then out on the sand track. None of that is difficult. There is also a run from Heike's Rd (as you come towards Woodgate from Childers) which takes you to Walkers Pt. Venturing further out there is more North and South of Bundy.

Otherwise it is a nice stretch of coast and if you have a kayak good paddling up Theodolite Ck and around the front of the main beach. We bush camp for 2 weeks (starting next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) in Burrum Pt and it is nice and quiet. Kinkuna is a bit more remote and generators are allowed.

Mate ....that is the bomb....looks awesome thanks....will we be able to park the truck on the beach so we can sit under the awning and let the kids swim or is it too regulated for that these days?

Not regulated at all. I live in this area and find myself on these beaches often. I spend a lot of time at Kinkuna and if you camp towards the North end, it isn't national park therefore a fire is no worries. Can be a good day, as you said, awning out, kids swimming, bbq lunch and then sit under the stars at night by a fire with a few coldies.
If you would like to know anything more about the area, drop me a PM and i'll help with what I can. I'll keep an eye out, may even see you on the beach.

        Cheers

As TFPRADO said it is very relaxed. The beaches are very kid friendly and the water is generally calm. If it blows up you can wander around to Theodolite Ck and get in the lee of the wind and weather. Sandflies up there are pretty savage so watch that if you have anyone who is sensative to them.
You can drive and park anywhere on the beach South of Woodgate (beach entrance near the Rangers' hut) but not North of that point. Still gives 20+km of firm beach to drive on. South of Burrum Pt there is a lot of detritus on the beach which makes getting back on a rising tide tricky and right at the Southern point it is mudflats. I don't drive down there because you really only have a couple of hours around low tide. In Dec/Jan the tides get up to 3m so there is very little beach in places to park safely at high tide.
Similarly no restrictions (that I know of) at Kinkuna but the beach is softer and harder to get off. Was looking for some Kinkuna pics from a couple of years ago but cannot find at the moment.
Have had no problems with fires on the beach or bbq on the beach. Just watch the rules in the NP.
Watch for road closed signs in the NP and don't ignore them, the Rangers have cameras in the trees and a love letter follows! Having said that the Rangers are a great group of people and very reasonable. Last year was a bit of a disaster weather wise and we were cut off in Bundy one night as the roads around Bundy flood easily. And don't forget the distillery tour(sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss).
North of Kinkuna there are lots of tracks and huts and gets quite busy on weekends.

Setting off Sunday for the drive weather is a bit of a worry as we got smashed at the caravan park and doubly so on Teewah....Never have I drove on a worse beach......Freshwater to Rainbow for a coffee....disappointed but I guess I should give it another chance...cant say enough about the quality and price of the Caravan park at Golden beach though...cleanest amenities and friendliest owners ever.......anyway Woodgate for better or worse here we come!!!!

We've stayed in a holiday house for a week at Woodgate a few years back and it was pretty fun. We did a drive throughout the Kinkuna area on the sand tracks for a few hours that was good too. We then drove out onto the beach from a random track which was a big mistake and the car got fairly stuck. The sand consisted of the dark yellow/brownish large coarse grains (the organic type) and the car only wanted to go one way and that was down further into it. It was the boggiest sand I'd ever driven on in my life to date. It took us ages to get the car out and the tide was halfway in. After that we steered clear of driving on the beach anywhere near that area. We swam in the ocean at Woodgate Beach 2 times during our stay and the water was the saltiest we'd ever gotten in our mouths. The sea was pretty rough when we swam though.

Palm Beach (Kinkuna NP) claims a number of cars each year, it has quite a slope, and is a quite coarse sand.

We visit Woodgate and Kinkuna regularly.

The area north of the NP has changed tenure and is now controlled by EPA, you can be written up for just being there (it is USL on a mining lease).

Have a great week, it's a beautiful spot.

Woodgate is one of my favourite places to holiday (and I've seen a bit of the world). Great place for the kids, there is plenty of nothing to do. We rent a house on Theodolite Creek Drive, beach at the front door, creek a few minutes up the road. Never had a problem driving on the beach but there are some spots to be cautious of.

Weather was great....the park is nice however review the siteplan befre choosing a site as they tend to fit them in everywhere......The beach in front of the park is interesting as the surk can change hourly....I recommend a trip to Theodilite creek each day as we did for your swim and fish but pay very close attention to the tides...make sure to arrive around 1 and a half hours before the hide and be finished an hour after the high tide.....photos to follow......

Glad you had a good time. The weather was average for us and pretty wet. I heard while up there from a Ranger that 2 4wds have been 'lost' on the beach in the last few months which is a bit of a surprise. Other than the big tides you can get up and down around high tide not that it is recommended. We usually work on 3 hours either side of high or use the track.

By park I assume you mean caravan park? At peak I would think it was pretty hectic in there. The camping ground only allows 13 sites spread over about a hectare and even that can get interesting.

                          OK Photos

The trip up to start with........a stop at the park at the entrance to Gympie....a fantastic kids playground and some parking for the car and van but few amenities so have your food organised

Geat spot and have markets on Sundays that are apparently great........
