Vic. High Country 2012

G'day all,
Planning on a week or so in the Vic. High Country next year with my son and friends. I have very little experience in this region, been they once about 30 years ago. What do you think is the latest I can leave it to before the weather becomes a pain. I was thinking about late April or early May? I dont mind the cold, but I do'nt want snow or wet, up to my arm pits.

I went there at Easter/April this year. We had half a day of drizzle at the border, and the remaining 5 days of fantastic weather. Very cold on the tops of course.

I wanna go later next time and get knee deep in snow.

Hi Bazza

We've done the High Country twice and both times have been late April and very cold at night (lowest temp was -6 degrees on Anzac Day at Sheepyard Flats 1500mts) but no snow. Days were reasonable around the 15 degree mark. Both times there was snow that day after we left.

We always get one early dump of snow in May. Just when in May and how heavy is any ones guess. High counrtry weather can be unpredictable. We drove to Licola via Mt Matlock through snow one year. Not unusaul? It was for Christmas lunch!(Dec 25 not July)
April is probably your best bet to beat the colder weather.

Thanks guys. Looks like it will be late April, early May. Must remember to add that second jumper to the packing list.

Trust me you'll need it, but the High Country is one of those places that should be on every 4WDrivers "bucket list", it is as iconic as the Simpson Desert and the Flinders Ranges.

Hey Bazza,
If you're timid about snow I wouldn't leave it any later then April.

I should explain what I meant by "very cold on the tops"...

Imagine a bucket of water and ice. If you put your hands in it, they'll get painfully cold pretty quickly. That's what the air felt like at 1,700 metres, at night time, in the wind. I'll never forget the midnight pees.. uncontrollable violent shivering!!
