Hey guys, I am organising a trip with some friends to Tasmania in 2012 during the October school holidays for the ACT. Not sure of the dates yet.

I am looking at camping in 3 spots during this time, 1st spot will be in the North East, the 2nd will be in the South and the 3rd will be in the North West. While south, we will be spending some a day at Port Aurther and a day in Hobart. Will be planning to try the Belfour track in the NW as well. Where would be some good places to look as well as some camping spots. There should be about 3 cars going all with camper trailers.

Any help would be great as I have never been to Tasmania.

If you're looking for a pleasant camping ground by the beach near Port Arthur, check out Lime Bay State Reserve (see map). No 4WD required but a great location.

G'day QbnPrado,

Depends on what sort of camping you want to do, if you want to set up a basecamp and do day trips to places, or if you want to just chill at the campsite style camping.

If you want "remote" and probably not too busy that time of the year I would look at Eddystone Point or Musselroe Bay in the North East,
In the south Lime Bay is nice as mentioned, as is Fortesque Bay however Lime Bay more so, it is a fair drive to anything of a "touristy" nature. On the Northwest/West coast I would look at Authur River or Marrawah, having grown up on the NW, there I think there is probably more to see and do on the West coast though.

If you want to keep closeish to civilisation and do day trips etc on the N/E I would look at Bay of Fires which is just a little out of St Helens, or would even look at Somewhere further south such as Swansee or Bicheno, probably more to do within daytrip distance from there.
in the South I would probably try somewhere closer to the City, I think there is fairly quite camping area at Marion Bay that would be a little more central than Lime Bay. On the Northwest I would say it would depend on what you want to do. I would almost say the West coast might be a better option, there are a few interesting placed to look at there. I would recommend the Montezuma Falls track as a pretty easy track and the falls at the end a pretty cool.

Hope that's of some use, happy to give you more ideas if you want them, not too many places in this state I haven't poked around.

Binalong Bay on the East Coast is a must. Will be deserted in October and is free.

Sad to say that the cost of getting here is probably going to be a bit prohibitive. Just did a quick enquiry online to check the price. To get a camper trailer behind a Prado over and back is going to be somewhere around $1600 - that is based on an internal cabin, you can go cheaper if you want to sit up the whole trip.
