      Hey craig,
not sure if this'l help at all, last time I drove from cairns to newcastle and back I stopped at Rocky then Maryborough on the way down. But on the way back distance meant that I stopped at a place called Woodgate, to get here you take the Goodwood rd just before Childers south of Bundy and follow it down to a small beachside community, very nice place, amenities so so but a nice view, after that heading north theres not really any seaside places to stop after Bowen until Townsville. After Townsville the hwy goes through Ingham then Cardwell, further north theres lots of places, Mission beach, Wongaling and Kurramine beaches before you get to Innisfail, where theres Flying fish point and Bramston beach between Ingham and cairns.

Hope this helps you a bit as im not sure what sort of ground ur planning on covering every day.
Btw give me a bell as you pass through cairns, have been thinking of a trip to cape tribulation if work allows. lol

There's a really nice spot at Fletcher's Creek north of Charter's Towers. You can camp on the edge of the creek, and if you use half boiled potatoes in the yabby pots, there are some seriously big redclaw in there for eating. We used to camp there a bit when I lived in Townsville. The other option would be on the beach at Ollera just north of Townsville. You take the track off the highway, and just jeep going straight. Drops you onto the beach, and a fantastic spot overlooking the local islands.
